It's a tough call, because nobody knows where .tel will stand in a few years.
It certainly is, Heads or Tails ?

I'm surprised it's true. My guess is Telnames has the same problem as Telnic with low sales and is desperate now in finding ways to compensate the high costs for the TV ad on Sky in December.

Of course, because everybody can see how easy it would be to program a better website builder than Telnames. I'm wondering why so many people are complaining about tel. Usually customers will leave and never come back if they are not satisfied. But probably most of you have invested too much money into a company that doesn't want to listen to you. I will just drop all of my tel and will find my peace with it.

Perhaps this will clear the situation even more:
According to http://teldomains.co/?go=drops 153,841 .tels dropped since June 2011.
Now you can think about the question of the poll above.

Telnames is preparing the price rise. The excellent "Welcome to Telnamees" video has been deleted from Youtube, because the old price $14.95 is mentioned inside.
I'm very sorry, but Ican't contribute any optimism to this discussion either. How this tld can survive without any improvement?

Telnames went live in April last year.
After that the Telnames customers' websites haven't been updated.
I conclude the price increase will come along with a major update.
Perhaps Telnames will provide flexible text sections and subfolders.
    That is good news!

You won't find out until after the anniversary of Telnames launch is reached - April 2013.

But remember that many Telnames customers paid either £5.00 or £9.95 with trade show discounts, so it's quite a hefty rise to be asked to register/renew at £24.95 ($40.68 at today's XE.com exchange rate) from 14 January 2013.

I'm surprised that Telnames has chosen to do this, since at 4 times the street price of a $10.00 Telnic .tel it really means there is no chance of existing registrars ever being able to offer the Telnames format.

This price rise has led me to rethink the transfer of up to 500 Telnic .tels to Telnames - the big problem of course is that the Telnic .tel format is no longer being marketed.

Maybe it's time to get the **** out of this never-ending catalogue of issues, or is it worth hanging on for just a bit longer ?

With such a price differential between a .Tel and a Telname, isn't that just the perfect excuse for .Tel registrars to jack the price up?

If only I could switch them off and make them vanish I'd do it in a heartbeat!

If you believe that one nice day something can drastically change for better, then, may it is worth to take a risk. Of course, the another thing is how much (and which ones) of the current TELs you have to leave and which ones to drop.

For example, I personally see no perspectives in keeping two-words TELs, because TEL is not a .COM (and never will be) and such TELs have any value now in the the nearest future also will have not.

It is better to have few TELs but instead of a high quality. And there is no need for many years ahead to keep big number of TELs with little value, because no profit will come from that, only expenses.

Especially, then we have a perspective that price of TELs will increase. See Telnic's plans here:
Natal wrote:Maybe Telnic is close to a breakthrough that justifies the price increase.
I understant that in this way, that if they will make a such "breakthrough", they will increase prices and we will have losses. If they will not make a "breakthrough", then we again will have losses because we will pay endlessly for renewing TELs, which has no value. So in any case we will have losses.

You mean Telnames of course, Telnic domains will hopefully remain at their current level of approx 10 USD.

Not sure what sort of "breakthrough" you think would justify a price increase of nearly 67% (ie. £10.00 increase on £14.95) ?

It looks like you just have to think of £24.95 as the "normal price", and the £14.95 we all got used to as nothing more than a temporary "introductory price" to Telnames !

    I try to guess:

    - in case with Telnames TELs a "breakthrough" could mean that they are preparing to add subdomains for them.

    - what could mean a "breakthrough" in case with Telnic TELs I at the moment have no ideas. May be a new design? Or design taken from Telnames?

Well I suppose £9.95 could be viewed as the street discount price, £14.95 as the normal price which turned out to be just introductory, and £24.95 as the new normal price which will exist for nn months ?

However you look at it the basic economic question remains - if something is not achieving the total revenue you want, does increasing the price (which will obviously reduce quantity of sales) lead to a greater or lesser total revenue ?

The jury's out on this - but when you've put $35,000,000 into a project perhaps you should just give the domains away for $0.01 for the first year to generate "critical mass" ?

Obviously Telnic couldn't have done this when selling via registrars, but Telnames is a "direct sell" operation and I assume they can sell at any price they decide to ?

    Suddenly I understand something!
This was the original plan: http://www.teltalk.org/t423-comparision-of-the-five-year-financial-projections-for-tel-before-after
    This is the reality:
    What 2013 will bring? - Page 2 9b12b4f6966b8492321028f78eb9f148
Telnic is much smarter than all of us.
Telnic has adjusted the business model to the reality while most of us still believe the original plan could be accomplished.
Telnic isn't reaching out for critical mass anymore, because Telnic knows it's impossible.
Telnic is just doing their daily work to continue on a low level and settle there.
With this perspective it becomes clear why Telnic has stopped all effort.
I'm blaming myself for not figuring out this earlier!
Now I finally know what to do with .tel.
And at this point I like to apologize to Telnic.
It was wrong to criticize Telnic, because I had high expectations which have been very unrealistic.
Telnic just did the right thing with stopping to ride a dead horse.
I don't mean this ironic, and I'm not mad.
I'll just reduce my expectations (and my involvement) in the same way as Telnic did.
