TEL Renewals 2013: What to do? Empty TEL Renewals 2013: What to do?

Post by Toptel 2013-03-15, 4:29 am

I was reading this forum a lot. Here my results after a lot of thinking:

    1. Website development is not recommended, because design is ugly, search results are bad and tools are not efficient
    2. Dropping most of all domains, because improvement is not in sight
    3. Keeping only very special 1A one-word domains for long-term targets in case development for .tel will ever happen
    4. Renewal fees should be kept as low as possible, because the probability is high that .tel will never succeed
    5. Many investors will give up this year; couldn't be wrong to do the same

    Thoughts from other members?

it is unbelievable, but telnic has never responded to the huge amount of complaints
you arrived to the only possible conclusion
another question is if a company deserves our support after it ignored us so explicitly (and was even trying everything to push us away)

Everyone knows what I think but I know people are not intrested but I'll say it anyway, adjust holdings to whats worth keeping then invest all your time here make it a full org then either buy telnic or take the proxy from them via a full ICANN challange.

Do the math, 200,000 regs pay 1 pound a month recuring subscription to teltalk a then not for profit org, = 12 pounds a year per person. 12 x 200,000 = 2.400,000 x 5 years = 12.000,000, thats correct right? 12mill? plus bank intrest and random donations to bump it up to 15mill and teltalk can buy telnic, or it's more than enough to force ICANN to grant the tel community the rights to run and develop the main proxy.

From reading here I hear in 5 years who runs the proxy is up for review, so having a full org, new tel intergrated forum, 200k+ members willing to pay towards the goal of getting or taking the proxy from telnic so we get the services we need is in my view a better plan than just giveing up.

As we all want the same to a degree, having an org where every member can put ideas and vote on them is better than waiting for telnic/telnames or what ever which might take more than 5 years.

All the admin needs to do to start is prepare to come out and look into the fees to setup a not for profit, then collect donations and from there we can see were we take it, or everyone gives up and walks away and the future will be stuck with what ever telnic decides is right for it.

Because tel wont go away it can subsist on low registrations, it only has to maintain the fees to ICANN, and whats that a per domain fee and 9k a year? plus DNS costs.

    My opinion:
Toptel wrote:1. search results are bad and tools are not efficient
Search results are bad (more precisly - very very bad) only for Telnames TELs. For developed TEL-directories with many subforlders they are good.

    Toptel wrote:1. design is ugly,
Designs are ugly for all templates except of Retro-template. With pictures now it looks professional - with that shortcoming that buttons and breadcrumbs there are not highlighted and this confuses visitors.

Toptel wrote:1. Website development is not recommended,
If you have an idea, or if you have a TEL for your business or hobby, then development of your TEL-directory is highly recommended.

Toptel wrote:2. Dropping most of all domains, because improvement is not in sight
Nobody knows what future could bring. It is a risk to drop domains and a risk to keep them. Situation may change to a better with a change of CEO, or it may change never. But in my opinion, most probably, it will not change till 2016.

Toptel wrote:3. Keeping only very special 1A one-word domains for long-term targets in case development for .tel will ever happen
It may be a good decision for people who can allow to have a risk.

Toptel wrote:4. Renewal fees should be kept as low as possible, because the probability is high that .tel will never succeed
It depends of Telnic. Surely, if they will decide to rise prices, then the last enthusiasts could leave, because nobody will want to have business with unpredictable guys.

Toptel wrote:5. Many investors will give up this year; couldn't be wrong to do the same
Surely it will be. Every next year of stagnation will reduce the number of people who still believe in TEL idea.

One thought that Telnic/Telnames might like to consider regarding renewals:

GIVE CUSTOMERS WHAT THEY WANT (OR CAN BE PERSUADED TO DESIRE) AND THEY WILL KEEP COMING BACK FOR MORE !

APPLE & BMW are two companies whose products I have used for years - and will continue to spend money on replacements in the coming years.

IT'S NOT ******* ROCKET SCIENCE - BUT SEEMS TO BE COMPLETELY LOST ON TELNIC/TELNAMES !

What we need is tools inside CTH, (like logos, we can add it inside CTH)
What we should be able to use in the CTH?
    1- images ads
    2- txt ads.
    3- embed videos
    4- add pictures
5- payment and form facility (to help directories like geo and generic. Mark is making 1 called teliforms http://teliforms.com/ )
6- facility for navigation in the site, five as maximum like: home, about us, etc (in my case with my movie.tel I can add things like: home, top USA box office, movie poster etc)
    7- Fonts.

Is the templates are ugly I do not mind because with those facilities written above we can makeup those templates.
As we say in my country Colombia: there is not ugly women, the problem is that they do not know how to makeup.

We can not sleep on the desk and cross our arms, we need to put a lot pressure to telnic telling they what we want for the good of everyone, soon or later in this case may be later they will change, they could not be like that for ever.

As I said before we need to help with the solutions we can start putting more pressure on this, I know that for telnic their priority is telnames.

A top executive in NOKIA said in an interview: when we read so many bad comments from our customers in twitter, we feel bad and under pressure, so we change to improve our products to see our customers happy.

So lets go to put more pressure to telnic, and more positive criticism, I will copy this post at telnic forum.

Also from next week I will post some others way to monetize.

Telnic is ignoring the pressure since years.
The only way to make them working is to drop as many domains as possible.

Should Telnic decide to work on the old design (contrary to all expectations), we might acquire even better domain names later.

I just wonder if dropping many (old Telnic format) domains might be OK by them ?

I have this crazy idea that Telnic/Telnames considers the 7K+ Telnames format registrations proof of big success to come, and that they want the old Telnic format registrations to just go away.

After all they do absolutely ZERO MARKETING for the OLD TELNIC FORMAT (sometimes called "Pro"), yet do trade shows, affiliate programmes, TV ads etc for the newer Telnames format.

As I said a crazy idea - but could it be true ?

Not because of the liability: you, me, all of you, DM, name.com and others could take legal action against telnic, at less they declare them self to go in administration (bankruptcy)

It doesn't need to be that extreme.
Telnic will just concentrate on Telnames and will let the old service die slowly.
    And this is happening already.

I think with the falling registrations of the 'pro' .tels the possibility of a price rise down the track is strong.

BTW Telnames is ultimately a flawed concept because pages can not be built around keywords related to owners' businesses. It is just a web presence - nothing more. Useless for search unless the only keyword is in the .tel name and the keyword has no competition.

    That is very bad!
Salaries should depend on performance, because without incentive the staff has no motivation to improve.
