TEL GLOBAL DIRECTORY to be launched by 3rd party ? Empty TEL GLOBAL DIRECTORY to be launched by 3rd party ?

Post by mikeseaton 2013-07-01, 6:50 am

Depsite Telnic still claiming that a Tel Global Directory already exists - it doesn't - I get the feeling that a 3rd party may well step into the breach and develop one.

To provide as much information as possible to any 3rd party that feels like taking on this task, I have created this thread so that forum members can list what they would expect from a Tel Global Directory.

Here's a few ideas from me to kick this thread off:

    1. Broken down into Countries.

    2. Category directory structure, with search box for non-category searching.

    3. Basic details listed from single page of Telnames .tels and home page of Telnic .tels - though not sure yet what "basic" would include ?

    4. Works seamlessly on all types of internet devices (desktops, laptops, tablets, smartphones).

    5. Click-To-Call facility when pulled up on a smartphone.

    6. Links through to original .tel for full information.

Do you agree/disagree with any of the above, or have any other requirements ?

    7. Rich snippets (especially logo and picture display from the .tel)

    8. Comfortable navigation through countries / areas / cities and categories

    9. Special sections (Upcoming events, outstanding and recommended services)

    10. Customer reviews

    11. Advanced search options (price range, features, distance, rating, best match)

    12. Detailed business information (opening hours, payment options, delivery, business specifications)

Use the map location data, and make sure it doesn't JUST use google. Example, return apple maps on an apple device

Given that the directory entry is NOT meant to contain all the data viewable in the original .tel domain (you link through for that), what do forum members think should be included in the "Basic" details shown in each directory entry ?

To enable the above to be achieved Country & Category dropdown lists need to be added as compulsory fields to the Telnames and Telnic control panels.

The dropdown list for Country that Telnames presents to you when paying for domains can be used - obviously a suitable Category list needs some more thought, though this can include "Other" for undefinable domains.

Without a Country dropdown list the directory software will have to allow for ALL permutations to be input in the free format address box eg. for the USA:
    - US
    - U.S.
    - USA
    - U.S.A.
    - US of A
    - United States
    - United States of America

This request for Country & Category dropdown lists has been made before on both the Telnic and TelTalk forums - so far no response from Telnic/Telnames has been received.

If Telnic/Telnames want software developers to save themselves the task of creating the promised Tel Global Directory these 2 small enhancements do have to be made !

    Must:

    • Company name
    • Business category
    • Company logo
    • Company address (street and city)
    • Main phone number and / or a call button for it
    • Company domain (.tel) and a link to it

    Helpful:

    • Opening hours
    • Map
    • Picture gallery
    • Video (perhaps as a small preview)
    • Business description

    @Philippe

    Thanks for the detailed response.

Perhaps if Telnic/Telnames could add the Country & Category dropdown lists we may get a software developer to produce a Tel Global Directory for the benefit of all connected with the .tel project ?

I've said this before, IMO there is no need for a TEL directory for the general public. Search engines index TEL fine for now. If Google etc could start using live DNS data that would even be better. What would be needed is a global clearinghouse of real-time information to give to online directories as subscribers to a service. That is what should be developed, however without critical mass premature at the moment.

Impressive statement by Mark. If he sees the possibility to reach critical mass with the currently available tools, maybe a change of mind by all of us is necessary. Despite the latest .tel statistics more optimism could be one of the most important factors.

Too bad that those statements are both a joke and a self-evident reason for a REAL directory.

    A. There IS a need for a REAL directory just like Facebook and any other service that offers a page and needs a place for people to find them easily, duh.

    B. Search engines index TEL fine for now is simply not true, and the reason for a TEL directory as suggested in A. above.

I would like to see Mark or ANYONE show me a place where I can search for .tel registrants and find them easily, WITHOUT a pile of subdomain garbage.

There is only one place that is remotely close, and that is Mark's own Telname directory at Teldomains.co

Create a REAL directory that is a Search Engine that REALLY indexes .tel domains and where search terms produce .tel registrants' only and you actually have EXACTLY what is needed ... still.

So it looks like no .tel software developer (there's hardly any left) is going to build a Tel Global Directory.

And Telnic already thinks they've got one !

The consensus of all .tel registrants regardless of type is the same:

    1. It's a value, I think I'll register one.
    2. Wait, what good is this value versus all the free options?
    3. None, drop.

Only Telnames with their Telnames Partner Network has the intelligence to see what is really needed, too bad it's virtually useless.

Until there is a REAL reason to augment your ".com" .tel will die.

The only real reason is the same as Facebook, Twitter, Yellow Pages, etc.

A reason to go to your page, found in it's own REAL directory.

    Duh.

Directory needs are obvious to the billions of users who use these services around the world every day.

Does anyone know any more about when Telnames might use this obvious success strategy ?

Or will they continue to side with the tens of people who think it is a waste of time ?

    Hmmm.

@GoTel - I think the main problem is that Telnic think they have already built a Tel Global Directory !

    A question.

Why not a collaborative "handmade" global directory? Like the old Yahoo Directory or the actual DMOZ.

As far as I can see, only 1/5 of the registered .tel (if no less) is with content.

It would be relatively easy to divide the work among us and build a directory on geographical bases.

In my bookmarks I have a list of about 800 Italian populated .tel sites ready to enter into the directory.
