iPhone 5 Introduction Officially Set for Sept. 12 Empty iPhone 5 Introduction Officially Set for Sept. 12

Post by Alex 2012-09-04, 6:16 pm

Apple has finally invited journalists to a San Francisco event Sept. 12—a day long ago circled on tech calendars as the launch of the iPhone 5.

By Michelle Maisto on 4th September 2012

Apple's iPhone 5 introduction just got a little closer. On Sept. 4, Apple finally mailed out invitations for a San Francisco event on Sept. 12, suggesting that at least two predictions about the long-awaited smartphone are so far correct: the Sept. 12 date—first predicted by Mac-centric tech site iMore in July—and that Apple will indeed call the sixth generation of its iconic smartphone the iPhone 5.

The invitation features the number 12, in the font of Apple's calendar app, throwing forward the shadow of a gigantic 5. Above it are the words: "It's almost here."

Twitter sprang to life with the news. "It's COMING!!!!! tweeted @film_girl. "Woohoo!" tweeted @MacLife.

Analysts with investment firm Jefferies have forecast that the launch will be the "biggest handset launch in history." With 170 million global smartphone subscribers expected to come out of their carrier contracts in the second half of this year, and 450 million more to follow in 2013, Jefferies analyst Peter Misek wrote in an Aug. 17 research note that the firm sees "significant and very fertile ground for the iPhone 5's success."

Misek was among the analysts to confirm that a Sept. 12 event was in the works, though he stopped short of adding that the smartphone will be joined on stage by a smaller iPad and a television.

"While we think an iTV will be ready for a [fourth-quarter] launch, we do not know how many major product announcements Apple would want to cram into Sept./Oct./Nov. and see a [first quarter 2013] launch as possible," Misek wrote.

Japanese tech site Macotakara has had no qualms about "confirming" that Apple will call the expected smaller tablet the iPad mini, though general consensus is that Apple will formally introduce the device at its own party in October, finding no need to split a spotlight between it and the iPhone 5.

What to expect Sept. 12? By all accounts Apple will finally increase the display of the iPhone to at least 4 inches. New data from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech shows that users with devices with larger displays are doing more with their phones, which causes higher user retention for brands—and that larger displays are a strong customer draw. Of the Android devices that sold in the 12 weeks leading up to Aug. 5, nearly 30 percent had displays larger than 4.5 inches.

Apple will almost certainly also include Long-Term Evolution (LTE) technology and near-field communications (NFC)—two technologies that have arrived on considerable numbers of high-end devices since the iPhone 4S was introduced without them.

Apple is also expected to show off new technology that integrates touch sensors into the liquid crystal display, eliminating the need for a second touch-screen layer and resulting in a thinner device with a crisper visual experience.

An aesthetic more in line with that of the iPad is also expected, along with proprietary mapping software that will enable Apple to kick Google Maps off its devices.

If still another of the many iPhone 5 rumors holds turns, Apple will begin shipping the device Sept. 21—in time for sales to affect Apple's current fiscal quarter.

According to AppleInsider, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster issued a Sept. 4 report noting that if the date holds up, Apple could sell between 6 million and 10 million iPhones during the final week of September, driving sales expectations, currently between 22 million and 23 million for the quarter, to at least 28 million units.

Apple CEO Tim Cook, in a May interview in which he gave away few clues about the iPhone 5 or other projects in the works, remarked, "Never have I seen the things I can't talk about today."

Interesting - will order one if the above spec is accurate - but will it generate more interest than a communications technology that could, but hasn't so far, change the way the world communicates for ever ?

Of course it will - because Apple has learnt the most basic of business lessons - give customers what they want (or can be persuaded to desire).

Telnic, will you ever do the same - or are the members of the Telnic and TelTalk forums no longer of interest to you ?

A not unreasonable question to ask based on what's happened in the last year or so !

I'm especially interested in the potential ability of SIRI to browse through websites.

Will it work better on .tel domains than on .com domains?

Another dream would be the implementation of name phone numbers, but I'm afraid we have to wait for the iPhone 6.

Henri Asseily promised (on Telnic's forum) that he would develop a SIRI interface for .tel as soon as the specification was available from Apple.

Not sure if this will apply to both Telnic (registrar) and Telnames .tel domains, or the level of progress Henri has made so far.

Why not contact him at http://Henri.tel and find out ?

My question from last month was answered by Henri as follows:
I can't speak about the iOS 6 specifics (under Apple's NDA) but from the public statements they say that Siri can open apps only, which is a far cry from expecting to get actual parsed vocal information from it. Maybe the next revision...

iPhone 5 Introduction Officially Set for Sept. 12 Empty iPhone 5 specs and features

Post by Alex 2012-09-12, 5:05 pm

All of the iPhone 5's specs and important features

By David Court on 12th September 2012

After months of build-up and rumours, Apple has finally launched the iPhone 5. The hype surrounding the iPhone 5 has led to it being tipped to break all previous smartphone sales records. See also iPhone 5 launch: as it happened.

Tim Cook announced in front of a room full of technology journalists that the iPhone 5 is an example of how "it's an amazing time at Apple, an extraordinary time" and that the "iPhone 5 and iOS 6 are the biggest things to happen to the iPhone since the iPhone". See iPhone 5 release date, specs and rumour round-up.

This is the first time the iPhone has changed its screen size since the original 2G iPhone launched way back in September 2007. Apple has kept the screen size of its iPhones and iPod Touches the same for continuity reasons all this time, so it will be interesting to see what effect the new screen size has on the iPhone 5's apps and OS. Take a look at the iPhone 5 price in UK and iPhone 5 Advisor too.

Here are the confirmed iPhone 5 specs and features:

    iPhone 5 screen:

The new iPhone 5 will feature a screen that is half-an-inch bigger than its processors. That means that the iPhone 5 will have an impressive 4-inch Retina display of 326ppi and an 1136x640 resolution.

Apple has said that older apps designed for the 3.5-inch screen will work in just the same way on the iPhone 5. Apps will just be centralised and the extra screen space on the sides will be greyed out.

    iPhone 5 processor:

As predicted, Apple has upgraded the processor in the iPhone 5. What might come as a bit of a surprise is just how much they've updated it. The new A6 chip found in the iPhone 5 has a 2x faster CPU and a 2x faster graphics. All this in a chip that is 22% smaller. Apple claims that the new chip offers 2x better performance across the board.

    iPhone 5 with iOS 6:

A lot has been made of iOS 6 and rightly so, it's going to bring a whole new style of cloud computing to Apple devices. Take a look at our iOS 6 preview for a more complete look at it.

iOS 6 for the iPhone 5 boasts over 200 new features. Here are a few that Macworld's Jason Snell and Dan Moren reported on during the iPhone 5 launch.

    • In Notification Center you can post a tweet or to Facebook.
    • Safari now has a fullscreen mode, which looks even better on the iPhone 5.
    • Now in IOS 6, you can get back to anything you have open on any of your dvices on the go. iCloud Tabs shows you the four windows open back on your Mac.
    • Next is Mail. Added a feature called VIPs, which lets you mark people as VIPs and all message from them in the inbox are collected in one place.
    • Passbook is next. This is the way to collect all your passes in one place: movie tickets, airline boarding pass, coupon, store card with a balance, ticket for a concert, a ticket for a baseball game. Evening Boarding pass automatically appears on the lockscreen when you're nearby.
    • Shared photo streams is next. Create a photo stream and when you add photos to it it shares them to your friends.

    iPhone 5 4G:

It's got 4G!!! The iPhone 5 has all of the iPhone 4's connectivity that includes GPRS, EDGE, EV-DO, HSPA, and added HSPA+, DC-HSDPA. The main addition to this is LTE. In theory the iPhone 5 can have up to 100Mbps download speeds. More importantly the 4G LTE on the iPhone 5’s 4G will work in the UK, unlike the new iPad’s.

    iPhone 5 camera:

The new iPhone 5 features a 8 megapixel sensor, which produces 3264x2448 images. Other features include a camera that is backside illuminated, has a hybrid IR filter, a five-element lens, and a fast f/2.4 aperture. Furthermore the iPhone 5's camera now has a dynamic low-light mode, which in layman's terms means it can work a lot better in low lights, 2 f-stops better to be precise. All of that and it is now 25% smaller that takes photos 40% faster. Impressive.

Apple has upgraded the iPhone 5's camera too. Vide is now capture in 1080p HD video, with improved video stabilization. You can also take photos while you're recording video. The front facing Facetime Camera has now been bumped up to a 720p HD camera with backside illumination, all of which can now work better with the aid of 4G.

    iPhone 5 specs:

    • Size and weight: All-new 7.6 mm anodised aluminium body that weights just 112g is 18 percent thinner and 20 percent lighter than iPhone 4S.
    • Screen: 4-inch Retina display of 326ppi and 1136x640 resolution.
    • Processor: A6 chip, said to be 2x faster across the board
    • Connectivity: GPRS, EDGE, EV-DO, HSPA, and added HSPA+, DC-HSDPA and 4G LTE
    • Camera: 8-megapixel iSight camera, backside illuminated, hybrid IR filter, five-element lens, and a fast f/2.4 aperture. The camera itself is 25% smaller too.
    • Video camera: Front: 1080p HD video. Rear: 720 HD.
    • Dock connector: New Lightning port that is 80% smaller than previous 30-pin connector.
    • Battery: Matched and improved the battery in the iPhone 4S. 8 hours 3G talk and surfing, 8 hours 4G surfing and 10 hours Wi-Fi surfing, 40 hours music and 225 hour standby.
