A survey of over 6,000 people who use the internet 5+ hours a week was conducted in February.
9% of them were aware of the domain extension .tel:

9% of internet users are aware of .tel Icann-10

For comparison, .coop has only 7,794 registrations and an awareness level of 5%.
.tel has with 123,742 registrations not so many registrations more.
100,000 registrations means nothing, while established domain extensions have many millions of registrations.
The level of utilization for .tel equals nothing.

At least with .coop you can develop it. .tel however is unique because it can't be developed and is therefore totally useless. The original 330,000 registrations were the result of massive promotion efforts around the time of the launch.

People worked out the extension was completely useless and registration figures started to fall. The problem with .tel is: You can't do anything with it.

It would be very easy to change that.
But for that Telnic has to provide the right tools.
Unfortunately Telnic decided to stop all development exactly 4 years ago (in 2011).
