.TEL has become the first domain extension in history with falling registration numbers back to the level of the first week after launch (in 2009)!

    Congratulations, Telnic!

The journey is not over yet.
Nobody knows how far we still fall.
    Will .tel survive?

This should happen in Mar/Apr 2014.
The 5-year anniversary of .TEL General Availability should see the first drop below initial registration figures in 2009.
    We're almost there now ....

Sad, sad, sad.  Too bad they just didn't put in a real directory.

There is always a time delay for dropping domains. Most domains have been registered in the months March and April and will drop from May until July.
Since .tel has mostly domain investors as registrants and very few businesses, many will follow the example of this massive drop that just occurred.

Hence the next crash will happen in the middle of 2014.

Now it's .mobi's turn with a dramatic net loss today of 67,168 as recorded at http://registrarstats.com/TLDDomainCounts.aspx

Still the remaining total registration figure of 1,073,452 .mobi domains looks a lot healthier than 148,192 .tels - less than half the March 2011 peak of 333,891 .tels as shown at http://www.hosterstats.com/DomainNameCounts2011.php

Stunning how much attention Telnic gets. Any other company would be very proud. Now Telnic needs something positive to talk about. Ha ha!

Who likes to support Telnic's target to throw out all customers and will cancel the domain subscription, too?

Consequently no .tel registrant will lose his domain(s), but the price level for renewal fees of domains will be renegotiated and is completely open.

What will happen if ICANN can't find a new registry operator for .tel, because of the lack in success and the high competition by thousands of new TLDs?

In that case nobody could use .tel domains anymore.
That wouldn't make a big difference, because already today most customers don't use their .tel domains neither.

NOT A LOT - .TEL WILL WITHER AND DIE !

ICANN insist on an insurance policy being in place to cover the immediate operating costs of a gTLD should it's Registry go bust, but obviously this only lasts for a limited period whilst a new operator is being sought.

The BEST solution to SAVE the .tel gTLD is for Telnic to realise (I don't expect them to publicly admit it) they have made an absolute ****-up of the .tel project and to salvage some shareholder value by selling out to a company like Afilias NOW !

But when have Telnic ever listened to members of this forum ?

I thought about saving all the money on renewing my TELs, but at last decided to have a further risk for few years more. Of course, after reducing to some minimal level number of my TELs.

There are so many similarities between Telnic and the former (also London-based) Global Name Registry...

In an effort to stimulate demand, GNR created PersonalNames and started to market domain names themselves. Don't know the exact reason, but I could imagine some communication between ICANN and GNR probably lead to the transfer of PersonalNames to Dotster.

Second level dot names were introduced, like all-numeric tel names.

Later they made another attempt and created FreeYourID to try to sell dot names and jump on the OpenID bandwagon. Officially the registrar was Key-Systems (!), who also took over the clients when FreeYourID shut down later.

Finally, in 2008, Verisign acquired GNR for $11.7 million.
