Statistics New Top-Level Domains

New gTLD marketing and advertising is definitely reaching "Joe Public" in the UK.

A few weeks back my window cleaner was asking me all about them.

Although different reporting sites had .club back and forth, today .club is solidly in 2nd position and on track for the number 1 position.

.club has their official launch in Manhattan, New York tomorrow, so quite likely to generate a burst of interest in the very near future.

By far not all nTLD will succeed, but within short time several will take off.
Meanwhile you can prepare for the day that .tel will be forgotten for all time.
.tel was a nice idea, but will stay exotic.
Since .tel has never reached marketability, there is a chance of zero that .tel will survive.
Look, until today .tel is still in pure beta!

I wonder if the owner of uk.club has plans to sell subdomain registrations in the same way that uk.com does ?

I have this feeling that .CLUB will pass .TEL on the way up as .TEL falls below the 100K level in the not too distant future - there are potentially thousands of .TEL drops in the next couple of weeks as non-renewals of March 23/24 .TEL registrations get officially dropped in the first 10 days or so of June.

I don't think that country code registrations will ever be valid at .club since they're reserved by ICANN rules as unregisterable for most tlds, but I am sure that there will be the selling of subdomains in various .club domains of many types.

UK.com did well then to get this domain registered and sell through these registrars

To most users a domain name in the format xxxxxx.uk.com - technically a subdomain - will be thought of as a normal domain name.

I used to have a UK.com domain myself - and also a US.com - until I acquired the .com itself and no longer needed them.

.com, .net, and .org had cc tld registrations prior to the cctld rule, so they were a "grandfathered" exemption.  New gtlds don't have much of a chance to get them allowed today.

Many are claiming that .xyz is not for real, and that most registrations are just tens of thousands of premium domains that are registered by the Registry itself.  A whois lookup for many domains confirms this is true, but they are playing the game well for now ...

Interesting! It was possible so quickly to bypass .tel with only one TLD out of so many new TLDs in the pipeline.

Even if they did it's a legitimate marketing tactic and one that was suggested for .tel way back in 2008 in this article

There is a chance — however slight — that .tel will succeed. Telnic will have to do a few things perfectly to get this to work. First, make .tel integrate into third party applications better than Plaxo, LinkedIn, Facebook, and MySpace currently do. Second, it should give away .tel domains to individuals and hope to make money on businesses instead. It must get to critical mass quickly, so that I have a reasonable belief that typing in myfriend.tel will get me what I want. Third, it needs to pray that Facebook doesn’t kill it overnight by creating some sort of online vcard.
