    Newspaper advertising of services

Is anyone doing any newspaper advertising to local businesses to sell .Tel domains and SEO services? Looking for ideas for advert copy.
    Mark

Mark, this is soemthing I have been considering myself - how to advertise locally offline.

I think there are two possible ways of doing this.

Adverts in newspapers are very expensive - and I am not so sure that newspaper advertising would get a credible message about SEO to the right audience in a cost effective way.

Another way of doing this is think of a good news angle that the local paper (the more local the better) would be delighted to publish - particularly on a slow day in the newsroom!

Write a catchy press release with a good local angle and supply images - always a choice of upright and landscape to keep page make-up happy.

Ask to speak to the editor - or news/business editor - and let them know what you are doing and that you would be sending in a press release and would be delighted to facilitate a follow up interview.

Write your PR with a good local angle:

'Mytown software engineer launches city's first mobile directory service'

'Mytown entrepeneur launches new web marketing service for local SMBs'

Deliver your core message in the first 3 paragraphs because it may be crudely edited at the last minute to make way for a late advert!

This works best with local papers. Freesheets that are widely distrubuted and respected can be considered, but are likely to look for accompanying advertising.

An alternative approach would be to offer to address the monthly meeting of the local Chamber of Commerce, JCI, Open Coffee, about your new service and how it would help local businesses.

These organisations usually have good contacts with local press and announce upcoming guest speakers and topics - so that is another way of getting free coverage in the local paper - and also on the local news website.

It's worth a try before forking out lots of money on costly advertising that you have no way of knowing is being read.

I know that this doesn't answer you original question about copy for advert, but I hope it is helpful nonentheless.

@tony mayo - totally agree with the whole article approach. Unfortunately we've been unable to crack this for over 2 years with the local papers. The frank view shared over a pint was that it doesn't make economic sense for the paper to do that as they are selling their own advertising/classifieds. Note, this was in relation to us writing articles on a local directory listings service. So if you do decide to go the article route be sure to check it doesn't conflict with any of their existing services.

We did manage to get a local MP to endorse one of our other sites and put out a press release. Posted the link on here a few years ago, can find it again if needed.

Agree totally dottel.net. Most newspapers now have syndicated directory services and would see a local directory as threat.
However, the alternative route via Chambers of Commerce, JCI etc may be a more subtle and fruitful route.
Maybe a tie up with a local news website that is not affialted to a newspaper might be another angle.
Offer them power listings in the local Tel directory as a contra deal for advertising on their website.

How about "Advertise With Us. TEL" on a local bush shed or bench as a first step?
actually it would need to look like this www.Advertise With Us. TEL so people would know it is a url...

Use different colors for the three words
