...about the DNS storage facility of .TEL domains - and the Phase 2 notion of DNS lookup of .TEL phone numbers is still light years away as it requires "critical mass" which shows no sign of happening.

ICANN's latest list of the potential new gTLDs arriving - see http://newgtlds.icann.org/en/program-status/application-results/strings-1200utc-13jun12-en - lists .CALL , .PHONE and .DIRECTORY which are potential rivals to .TEL.

So what's to stop these new extensions from replicating what .TEL does but just not storing the data in the DNS ?

If properly marketed worldwide, with maybe tens of thousands of web sites selling the domains as Affiliates of http://www.CJ.com and/or http://www.TradeDoubler.com they could blow .TEL out of the water in no time !

Please tell me why this won't happen - there are a lot of pro-active entrepreneurs behind these new gTLDs !

They are not approved and if they overlap what .tel does as .tel has patents and copyrights etc they can't do it the same way so ICANN will only take the APPLICATION FEES and REJECT THEM and if they don't well telnic is in prime place to sue someone.
    ..
ALL NEW TLDS are not supposed to overlap though things like .mobi can be storage facility domains aka .tel is the only game allowed in town and should remain that way as ICANN and telnic have legal agreements
    ..
And even if they did get approved they can't run them on the DNS they can only run them via basic servers as it would infringe on telnics implementation thus it could never meet the capabilities and low cost to run via a DNS aka it will always be slow and will always cost a fortune in web server hosting costs.
    ..
Plus why buy 1 domain per type of thing you want to do when you can get it all and more in .tel? and any marketing they did would show them up for how stupid they are and how better .tel is and will be.
    ..
Don't panic it's not going to hurt .tel

I know they can't replicate the DNS approach (without ICANN's agreement) - that's what I was saying in my post - but users don't care where data is stored !

Is it really the case that .tel is so much faster than all other domain extensions ?

It doesn't seem to have drawn eager users into registering .tels so it seems reasonable to conclude that this is not a major factor to domain registrants currently.

If done at an individual domain level yes, but I wasn't talking about that. I was talking about the "hosting" being done at a registry level which spreads the cost amongst all the domains registered.

If effective worldwide marketing generated say 1,000,000 registrations against .TEL's current total of 270,000 then the unit cost per domain would likely be less, even though Telnic is maintaining nameservers only.

You cannot assume that the most technically pure product is what succeeds in the marketplace - there are many other factors that lead to success or failure !
