I have just read the above ICANN report. After the multitude of negative comments about Telnic continuing to be the .Tel Registry operator I note ICANN wrote:

On the other hand, one commenter expressed their support for Telnic’s continuing to be the Registry Operator of .TEL TLD and also pointed out some areas of improvement...

So one supporter of Telnic - that’s OK then - better let Telnic have a 10 year renewal !

I am worried about ICANN’s summary position quoted below:

ICANN notes that numerous comments expressed concerns regarding Telnic Limited’s business model. As discussed above, ICANN does not prescribe or proscribe Registry Operators’ business models.

ICANN appear to be categorising the multitude of complaints about Telnic as just dissatisfaction with it’s “business model” which they say is not their concern !

Not sure when the ICANN Board of Directors are meeting to formally make a decision, but it’s not looking too likely they are going to replace Telnic as they need to do.

I’ll wait and see what the ICANN Board decide but IF TELNIC CONTINUES AS THE .TEL REGISTRY FOR A FURTHER 10 YEARS IT REALLY IS GAME OVER FOR THE .TEL EXTENSION !

PS. Telnic Ltd, and their 100% owned subsidiary Telnames Ltd, are still hiding their true financial position from public scrutiny - see http://www.teltalk.org/t1733p175-telnic-pulls-a-cunning-move#15869

    That was it!

It will be very quiet around .TEL in the future. The last hope for improvements has died with the decision to let Telnic in charge. .TEL will now continue to die slowly.

Interesting article by DomainNameWire at http://domainnamewire.com/2016/10/21/remember-tel-might-change

I had to pinch myself reading the 27 September letter sent by Telnic CEO Kash to ICANN - you can read it for yourself at https://www.icann.org/en/system/files/correspondence/mahdavi-to-icann-board-27sep16-en.pdf

This letter was sent to the ICANN Board of Directors by Kash to counter the large number of complaints against Telnic by .TEL users recorded at https://forum.icann.org/lists/comments-tel-renewal-04aug16

Here's just one extract from the letter sent to ICANN by Kash:
We continue to host an online forum where community members can share their experiences, ask questions and get product support either from Telnic or other community members and our newsletters have been very popular as a means of providing the community with TLD updates.

Without wishing to state the obvious:

    1. Where is the forum - Telnic banned members who didn't follow the party line and then closed it down years ago !

    2. Where are the current newsletters - the last one was published over 6 years ago in March 2012 - see http://www.telnic.org/community/newsletters !

Experienced members of the TelTalk forum will read the letter at https://www.icann.org/en/system/files/correspondence/mahdavi-to-icann-board-27sep16-en.pdf and recognise the sheer PR glossiness that has been put by Kash onto the true situation regarding Telnic's appalling handling of the .Tel Registey in the last 10 years !

Having said all that - the idea of UNRESTRICTED .TEL - NOT RUN BY TELNIC - definitely appeals to me !

    http://MikeSeaton.tel

PS. Memo to Kash - you really ought to remove the reference on Kash.tel to being CEO of Telnic Ltd's 100% owned subsidiary Telnames Ltd given that "Direct services at telnames.com have now been closed" and it is no longer possible for a new user to register a Telnames-format .Tel domain name as used at Kash.tel !

Good news: .tel will be able to be used as "normal" website.

Bad news: The incapable Telnic will stay in charge for another decade.

Conclusion: I see no new reason to invest time or money for .tel!

It would be much wiser to register meaningful domains like flower.shop or service.online. But what is the reason to buy a domain like NobodyKnows.tel?

For the first time since 2009, it would be possible to create a .tel website in a timely design.

    Do you disagree?

I have not yet created my opinion on that point.

I think that it might be that then TEL will become like one of these newTLD (and I do not belive in newTLD).

Following the ICANN request for Public Comments re Telnic's renewal of the .TEL Registry agreement at
    https://www.icann.org/public-comments/tel-renewal-2016-08-04-en

and the resultant Public Comments made at
    https://forum.icann.org/lists/comments-tel-renewal-04aug16

and the ICANN Staff Report on these at
    https://www.icann.org/en/system/files/files/report-comments-tel-renewal-07oct16-en.pdf

and the letter from Kash to ICANN at
    https://www.icann.org/en/system/files/correspondence/mahdavi-to-icann-board-27sep16-en.pdf

it seems that 8 November 2016 is the day the ICANN Board makes the decision on Telnic's application to administer .TEL for another 10 years.

The result of the ICANN staff report is already a clear statement that the .TEL registry agreement will be extended.

ICANN completely ignores the fact that Telnic has violated the regulations of this agreement many times in the past.

Very soon .TEL will become a normal gTLD.
Unfortunately the term .TEL has no significant meaning for domain names, hence .TEL won't be attractive for registrants at all.

The only way to make a positive change would be attracting new customers by a strong initiative to improve the product, but this will be impossible with Telnic. Telnic has shown us many times that no improvement of .TEL is wanted.

The decision to let Telnic continue the operation of .TEL will lead to the continuation of the stagnation that we have seen during the last years.

If you want to create a meaningful domain name, you have to pay attention using a term each on both sides left and right of the dot that reflects your business well.

With a lot of TLDs you can build such a meaning like with .club, .shop or .live.
But why should a business choose .tel for its company website?

If .tel would provide an easier and cheaper way to create a website than with other TLDs, than it would be a different case.
But unfortunately, the opposite is the case.
It's impossible to create a nice website, it's not easier than administering other website builders and it's not cheaper than a lot of other TLDs.

If you have any concerns here's ICANN's advice over what to do !

However, the terms of the .TEL Registry Agreement set forth the contractual obligations that must be fulfilled by Telnic Limited in its operation of the .TEL registry but do not prescribe or proscribe the Registry Operators’ business model. Additionally, the Staff Report of Public Comment Proceeding encouraged those commenters that desire to see changes in the business model of the .TEL registry to contact Telnic Limited to discuss these matters.
