Post by Expert 2013-02-11, 11:34 pm

www.hibu.com has registered hundreds of domains at Telnames yesterday (with U.S. registrant address).
Hibu is a UK Limited (formerly Yell), a heavy weight for Yellow Pages and registered the Telnames as pay-per call service!
This could be the sign all forum members have been waiting desperately for!

Perhaps .tel doesn’t need a special .tel directory if 1.) all Telnames will appear on Yell or 2.) all Yell customers will get a Telname.

PLEASE BE REALISTIC - THAT'S A LESSON I HAVE LEARNT FROM MY INVOLVEMENT WITH THE .TEL PROJECT !

I suggest reading this article from today's Daily Mail Online:

Former Yellow Pages publisher Hibu posts a grim trading update after missing deadline over debt mountain

Here's a quote from the article:
Hibu, which is in danger of collapse after gorging itself on a series of questionable acquisitions at the top of the market, has already warned there is ‘material uncertainty’ about whether it can continue trading.

It also said it was likely to default on its loans and that its shares are probably worthless.

The shares jumped yesterday, so can't be all bad.
And here's a quote from another article just yesterday that is positive news.

"Pilots are well underway for a range of new digital products and services to support business owners in promoting, commercialising and running their ventures. These will help them accept card payments, offer loyalty programmes and benefit from affinity schemes as well as better connect with their consumers. Further launches are expected over the coming months."

The about 200 domains from Monday could have been a test run for the new API Mr. Bowen-Morris mentioned last spring: http://blog.kelseygroup.com/index.php/2012/05/24/telnic-eyes-opportunity-in-enabling-soho-businesses/

Hibu must have millions of customers.
The question is how many will get a .tel: all, only new or only chosen customers.

A real scenario if Hibu sees the potential, because Hibu has acquired many other companies as well.

It seems that then all parties should be happy: Hibu, Telnic, Telnic's shareholders, Telnic's customers, Telnames' customers, and Registrars of TELs. And even ICANN.

It's only a theory, but it would be a sensation for everyone - and the turnaround.

    Post by fustachio.tel 2013-02-28, 3:32 pm

I may have miss understood about this hibu thing but I thought the point of a .tel was to export data into other websites and services not import unless for small apps doing specific tasks, I don't see the point in Yellowpages and Yell and such having their own proxy as the telnames one is good enough to push data into those services so no one needs to sign up direct, if I was able to use the app I should be able to do it via the telnames app with a single tick box, while providing those services with a small cut of the pie on each renewal I make to keep automated listings importing, the telnames app could have become a sort of go through for directories and sites that are local to you, to request to provide you with a listing page to share via their own medums and import updates from the DNS of your tel.

Tagging images as product, logo, store etc should provide a great frame work to make 3rd party automated listings as simple as a click, as for regular tel directories based on location aka GEO could apply just the same as big sites
by getting telnames to include you in the listings providers that auto show to the telname owner who enters their location that is your town or city directory.

So you no longer have to do all the work, you just absorb micro payments for each listing and keep paying the renewal fee, telnames servers manage your tel directory based on who requested a listing via the tick box in the telname app that showed your .tel geo because that company is in your city/town. Which would leave you reselling telnames the more attractive proxy, taking your sales cut then making sure the owner ticks your box for a listing or even having it pre-ticked based on your referal id etc, steam resells games so why can't telnames sell access to directories via DNS automation? or is that what Hibu is doing? buying access to import to telnames and re-selling? because that seems backwards as tel is an end point, a tld that exports data making sure owners only need one app and one page to manage their business & profile listings, and importing all data from Hibu seems backwards regardless of what they offer.

Otherwise I don't know why its powered by Hibu when it should always be powered by telnames and exported data into Hibu and other sites, or why make telnames? because telnic was forced to put a high cost on running a custom proxy? because without the theme telnic is just telnames and all this could have been done via that, so maybe the issue ICANN being so restrictive and a mess that legal work arounds have to be done just to make a tld that is not just a reseller opertunity for an ICANN presidents bonus and new car to be of use to regular folks.

THIS HIBU ARRANGEMENT NEEDS TO COME WITH A HEALTH WARNING !

The Tel Domains are registered in HIBU's name - NOT YOURS - so if you fail to renew at whatever HIBU's annual charge is you will lose all your domain name traffic and goodwill that you have spent ages building up !

What a big disaster if the holder will lose those outstanding domains!
Otherwise I don't care how Telnic will reach the always preached critical mass as long finally they will start working on something.

I do not see a problem with this. Business people are grownups. They read the fine print and they choose. They snooze they lose.
A person can easily forget to update his credit card information in his registrar's account and lose a valuable domain name and the site content and traffic. Happens all the time.
As to the fees that Hubu is charging its clients.... markets will dictate that. Competition is getting fierce.

Its the functionality of the product that is important. Business people want reasonable functionality and no headaches and they will be happy.

The importance of keeping ownership of your internet contact page, with a .TEL DOMAIN REGISTERED IN YOUR NAME, has been made many times by Henri Asseily - the Chief Technology Officer of both Telnic and Telnames.

So it's a bit surprising to see a deal being done with HIBU that goes against this core business philosopy !

Mike is right in many ways, as example if the domain owner wants to sell his domain later or Hibu shuts down this service.
On the other hand certainly the registered names by a technical routine like this will never gain any value.
