Of course the implementation of .tel would be the ideal solution, but so far it's not recognized by the phone industry.
When phone numbers will be replaced by .tel or any other solution for dialing names instead of numbers?

The sooner name dialing will be introduced, the sooner we will know if .tel will be something every phone owner wants to have.

Henri Asseily - Telnic/Telnames Chief Strategist & CTO - has made it clear in his posts on this subject that he doesn't believe Telcos can be persuaded to make the necessary modifications to their systems until .tel has achieved CRITICAL MASS.

So answer the question of when (if ?) .tel will achieve "critical mass" and that's the point at which Telcos MAY start getting interested in modifying their systems to allow for Dial/Email/Skype/Etc by Name - known as Phase 2 of the .tel project.

IMO recent actions indicate that Telnic/Telnames are no longer particularly focussed on achieving the "critical mass" so essential for Phase 2 - instead they appear to be aiming at the sole trader and 1-9 employee business mobile site builder market.

Are they right to change focus ?

    Time Will .Tel !

One more consideration - don't forget that as .tel stalls others are developing new ways of calling people - see Facebook to introduce Social Calling for an example.

If somebody else will come up with a succesfful and worldwide accepted name dialing operation, it would bring clarification for all of us.
Then finally we would know that .tel would have been failed.
But if I forget what .tel offers today and instead I take a look at how .tel could work as name dialing operation, then indeed it’s hard to imagine somebody else can provide the same benefits including domain ownership, profile management and Telfriends.
.tel only needs to be developed a little bit further, but the DNS is already in place.

That service is a crutch. That is not name dialing; the callers still have to dial numbers.

But with AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon and Sprint all important players are on board.
And you know what? This service was accepted by them completely without reaching critical mass first. Perhaps Henri was wrong with his opinion:
