If owners are not willing to renew even "premium" domains like hotel_tel and berlin_tel, then it is obvios that the interest had disappeared.
Telnic/Telnames LTD made a great mistake when they cancelled subdomains. Of course, if it was not their сonscious intention to ruin the extension for the sake of their inside games for shares.

One month after the allowance of web hosting for .tel domains, we now know for sure that this was a big mistake.
.tel had something special. It was only badly implemented, because Telnic didn't want to spend any time and / or effort for the development.
Now .tel has nothing anymore. Let's forget about this domain extension and its terrible management by Telnic.

Let's move on and check out more promising opportunities (.online or .shop)!

It's a shame that Telnic/Telnames haven't got their act together and sorted out the above registration reporting link - it was always very useful as it showed both drops and new registrations separately.
In the absence of the above being updated an alternative reliable source I know of is http://research.domaintools.com/statistics/tld-counts which shows the Total .TEL Registrations, but not the daily drops / new registrations.
Still something is better than nothing, so today 9 May 2017 we have 102,335 Total .TEL Registrations according to http://research.domaintools.com/statistics/tld-counts
Make of that what you will !

If Telnic/Telnames insist on .TELling the world that there are ZERO .TEL Registrations day after day at http://registrarstats.com/TLDDomainCounts.aspx - which of course is UNTRUE - do they really expect buyers to beat a path to their door when they have "Premium" .TEL domains to sell ?
Telnic/Telnames have had months to get the reporting link at http://registrarstats.com/TLDDomainCounts.aspx sorted out - it used to work OK - but as usual Telnic/Telnames have sat on their hands and done nothing !
As I've said before, Telnic/Telnames need to hand over running of the .TEL gTLD to a dynamic, pro-active, well-funded company who understand that the internet is a 24/7 operation, not a 9 to 5 job !
I even found Telnic/Telnames a potential buyer - see http://www.tel.community/t4387-afilias-wants-to-buy-failed-gtld#15215 - but as usual they simply did nothing at all !
