New Search engine to keep an eye on.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/01/te...ref=technology

Blekko aims to show search results from only useful, trustworthy sites.

“The goal is to clean up Web search and get all the spam out of it,” Mr. Skrenta said.

Blekko’s search engine scours three billion Web pages that it considers worthwhile, but it shows only the top results on any given topic. It calls its edited lists of Web sites slashtags.

    dottel11-01-2010 05:24 PM

yeah it's like giving much weightage to only those sites which are there since years and years.
search engines like this are a big headaches for small business and new ventures to grow.

a few random searches showing links from only one or two very popular sites..ROFL:D

to me this are the worst search results that I have ever come across

    spline11-03-2010 09:55 AM

Hmm, thats how it is with google right now, who place to much on age. But with the slashtag its up to you.

Another searchengine that started out as a semantic search (understand you question) is hakia.com it also have a credible sources search.

However I think the search results was really impressive and in many cases better than google.

    Shahid11-03-2010 11:13 AM

it nice for people who is looking for answers to questions rather then people who are looking for services, buying, selling , trading or getting information from resourceful sites.

good is better not only because of it's search but people know that a pool exist and its called GOOGLE

unless you are looking to find a cure for head pain as it is given or was given in one of the example

Thanks for the info Bunjie re http://blekko.com - have just checked out one of my DotComs (http://blekko.com/ws/site:boatsearchworldwide.com) and my personal DotTel http://blekko.com/ws/site:mikeseaton.tel and both are in the Blekko results (as distinct form the Yahoo results it lists underneath).

The fact that it is listing Dot Tels shows that a young domain age will not be a barrier to getting listed in http://blekko.com

good that your site comes on top spot for your/site name.
but the fact is how many of the business are happy with the results..because for a commercial business that's what it matters and not some top spots for no/less competitive key phrases.

the attached screenshot in my previous reply clearly shows the fact that bLeKKO.com showing too many results from one site, where as other top search engines put a "+" right under one such result. If the user wants to see the results from the same domain he/she will click on the "+" sign which will expand the results.

Showing those many links from one domain/site, that too assigning each link a ranking spot (11, 12, 13...) is silly.
They could just display one most appropriate link from all those ones and a "+" option right under that ranking spot should allow other sites to continue 11th spot

Dottel, why such a downer on new search engine http://blekko.com ?

The guy who founded it, Rich Skrenta, has a track record of success on the internet, having started The Open Directory Project athttp://www.dmoz.org. The search engine itself in still in Beta form and tweaks like you suggested may well be incorporated soon after it goes live.

The point of the search http://blekko.com/ws/site:mikeseaton.tel is to show that http://blekko.com is actively listing Dot Tels in its main results (as distinct from the Yahoo results it also shows) which indicates that a young extension such as .tel is going to get free traffic from a new search engine.

I personally have no objection to receiving free traffic from http://blekko.com - even if it lacks the sophistication that Google has developed over the last decade.

He might have a great success record but my way of consideration is individual project. Even in Google I have many things which I hate, So I really do not just praise based on their previous track records.

if you are saying site:domain.com is listing in main results then, I would like to correct it. Because site: is to check whether a site is indexed in a search engine or not.

Getting indexed and having top rankings for relevant keywords is different.

Coming to your site, yes it shows up when I search for "Mike Seaton" and I am happy to see that. My point is the Blekko is not really there to be called as Spam free search engine. It has different issues (like one which I have mentioned here).

Lastly It's just what I see today, I did not like it. may be if they improve things I would be in forefront to appreciate, promote and be a fan :)

    Mike,
Re dmoz.org, is that still worthy of consideration, I was going to run this past some of the more esteemed members on the forum for an opinion, however since you mentioned it.
Can you comment, I submitted a .tel a while back, am still waiting for a response, I'm aware this can actually take months (many), the speed is more steam rather than digital age.

    Hi Cees,

I've started a new thread re this at http://telnic.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1569 to avoid going off-topic in this http://blekko.comthread.

The point is, people and the official owners can edit /slashtag your .tel sites per "category" so news.tel results would show up under query /news and say 400,000 end up following that tag, your results will get huge amounts of traffic because you wont have to compete with news.spam.tel results or normal spam pages.

They will still show up in the engine when querying normally but the point is logged in users will now remove your sites if they dislike them and they will never see them again if they don't remove it from /spam, and eventually if your site is disliked by a large percentage you might find it wont exist in this engine for none logged in users as well.

I been in discussion with them suggesting that parked domains get's it's own /parked because as we all know that most of these .tels do absolutely nothing for .tels over all reputation and are a waste of internet space and investment while we all await users to be bothered to use them.

I myself am as guilty as sin for having .tels that need content, but I suggested they put them in /parked and we can get alerts when they change owner or content so we can take a look if we want that in our searches again.

It's in beta so if .tel is going to do well sign up and start slashing .tels or get people whom have /tags with your category to add your .tel to it.

People might doubt now but the reason this will be big is because it puts the power back in the users hands, aka /spam, Google has spent far too long at the top and is an evil to it's self, and while it brings traffic having the ability for people to find your .tel as part of a vetted resource (approved not spam) will make it better than Google it will also bring you like twitter followers but in a 3rd party sense.

So basically expanding the reach of your .tel to people who do other query's and might not have picked up on your .tel

World's biggest search engine - dead

    Death of another google killer?

Since Sep 2010, there were some news that Cuil.com is gone
    and looks like its true..

    Founded in 2005, launched in 2008 & gone in 2010 ?

    spline11-20-2010 10:36 AM

When I tried cuil, it allways gave me bad results, far from as good as blekko.
