If you want to make money...

...on a Telnames .tel then you need to know what are the market niches users are buying into.

    Ok, now we are talking!
This is finally how directories can proceed to upsell a .tel
    Great news.

That would be difficult, because Telnames doesn't allow building directories.

There are already several discussions at TelTalk.org relating to this topic.

...and the Telnames opportunities just keep coming - after the Affiliate Program announcment here's the detail of how to become a Telnames VAR (Value Added Reseller) - http://www.telnames.com/partners/resellers

Could this be just in time to save the value of .tels on the aftermarket ?

I mean the prepaid "out of the box" .tel is what the directory owner pushes to the local small businesses already listed in the free directory. Substitute link after small business takes over their own listing

    mikeseaton09-19-2012 09:04 PM

I really have a very good vibe about the Telnames .tels - although I would still like a Google AdSense ad above and below the content !

It's what the original .tel philosophy was - just a shame it took 3.5 years to get there !

Still that's water under the bridge now - let's concentrate on making the http://YourBusiness.tel template style the recognisable face of .tel worldwide.

The obvious "elephant in the room" is that the Telnic registrars are still selling the old subdomain-style .tels - there needs to be a mechanism put in place to allow them to offer the Telnames format asap !

Have just applied to the Telnames Affiliate Program.

The only downside to the application process is being able to just specify 1 URL - I submitted http://Domains123.tel but would liked to have been able to submit http://UK.BoatSearchEngine.com as well - it's visitors are just the sort of buyer that Telnames are targeting.

But with only 1 site able to be listed I thought I'd better go for my domain sales site.

Sorry guys I've been away for awhile and coming back to catch up on the .tel scene.
I'm bit confused about what telnames.com is. I like the new .tel templates I see at http://yourbusiness.tel/, with the nice image as background and the icons.

But am I reading that only telnames.com can do this? I don't get it since I thought all templates were available through the .tel DNS so whatever registrar we have with .tel should have the http://yourbusiness.tel/ template.

So from what I gather, Telnic owns Telnames.com and is now acting as a reseller to sell this unique template? But Telnic is not offering it to other registrars/resellers?

If this is true, I am really dissappointed with Telnic and will abandon all my investments.

    Correct !

Many of us hope the situation will change and that Telnic registrars will be allowed to offer the Telnames http://YourBusiness.teltemplate, but your summary above describes how things currently are.

That's not a unique reaction - many others feel the same and have abandoned or reduced their investment in the .tel project !

FWIW I believe Telnames really are onto something with their single-page template (promo example http://Ben.tel) where you can upload directly from the Telnames Control Panel your choice of video, image gallery, background image and discount coupon.

Besides the essential worldwide marketing (which Telnames appear to be starting now), the missing ingredient is to find a financially attractive mechanism for Telnic .tel owners either to transfer their domains to Telnames or to have the Telnames template at their current registrar.

Sort this out and Telnames are onto a real winner, but as with everything on the internet "Time Is Of The Essence", particularly with 1000+ new gTLDs about to be launched which will soak up software developers time and domain investors money.

The future of the .tel project is now in Telnames hands - let's hope they take the necessary action now !

So what I don't understand is:

    1) Why telnic is not offering the template to all registrars? I have 100 .tels registered through dynanot and now I can't use the nice template? Is telnic trying to take away business from other registrars for themselves?

    2) Why can't one add subpages/subdomains with the new template?

My biggest grip with .tel before was the mundane non appealing template. The new template has really built up my confidence but now it's not widely available for us.

It's very frustrating to always be dealing with some kind of limitation with the .tel domain.

    mikeseaton09-26-2012 07:30 PM

Why not give http://Kash.telhttp://IanBM.tel or http://Justin.tel a ring and ask for answers to your questions ?

Their phone numbers are on the above links, and all are "click-to-call" of course !

Mike is it possible to add CJ ad code to tel domains? We have only two Adsense slots right now. I don't think Mark's Telmasters' tools will work in this case. Open to correction of course.

    Mark Kolb (Kprobe)09-26-2012 08:01 PM

If CJ uses a script, then NO. If they allow embedding of affiliate codes in the links and images, then YES.

YES - it's very easy to do !

There are 2 ways of doing it - either use a redirect script as I do - or just put the affiliate code in directly.

Have a look at http://usa.discountgolf.tel and then the link to Golf Outlets of America.

The link there is to a redirect script I have written in my domain dottelmedia.com - all this script does is redirect to the CJ linkhttp://www.dpbolvw.net/click-1111111-2222222 (example is non-operational since 1-1 and 2-2 are dummy values) where 1111111 represents my CJ Publisher ID (PID) and 2222222 represents the CJ Advertiser ID (AID) for Golf Outlets Of America.

So instead of the dottelmedia.com link I used (which is more user-friendly) I could just as easily have entered the CJ affiliate link above - the end result would be exactly the same i.e. the user ends up at http://www.golfoutletsusa.com/default.aspx with a CJ affiliate cookie set.

    Hope this helps !

That's great Mike. Another way of monetizing .tel

    What about mobile?
Does above code work as a click to call?

The pay per call would seem to be a huge opportunity for directory builders.

    mikeseaton09-28-2012 07:03 PM

Tony, there will be no problem using the affiliate links on a mobile, but if the advertiser does not serve up a mobile-friendly screen in response the clickthrough will likely be wasted !

Regarding Pay Per Call on .tel, check out http://www.teltalk.org/t146-new-pay-...on-opportunity for info on what's available now to UK publishers via CJ's partnership with RingRevenue.
