    Sedo sells domains that has not? Empty Sedo sells domains that has not?

    Post by silvano 2012-09-04, 3:43 pm

    In July I found a domain available to be registered and I purchased it from Domainmonster for about 15 €: "albenga.tel"

    Yesterday, browsing through Sedo, I discovered that Sedo is selling "albenga.tel" for 500 €.

    I don't want to sell the domain, I've never used Sedo and I don't have an account on Sedo.

    I wrote an email to Sedo and I'm waiting for the reply.

    I'm wondering if Sedo is a reliable Company...

    Ah, also "alassio.tel", domain not taken, available to be registered (for 10-15 €), is for sale on Sedo for 500 €.

    Sedo is the largest domain marketplace in the world, totally trustworthy in all my experience with them (as both seller and buyer) and is very quick at paying sellers following a successful domain sale.

    What you have to appreciate is that Sedo are not actually selling domains themselves, they are facilitating the sale of domain names by sellers who list them for sale on Sedo's marketplace.

    When you open a (free) account with Sedo and "Add Domain" they check the Whois to ensure you are the owner before listing it for sale on their marketplace.

    If that domain is subsequently dropped, or sold through other than the Sedo marketplace, they have no mechanism in place to be advised of that fact.

    They have to rely on the Sedo account owner deleting that domain from their own Sedo account - but this doesn't always happen immediately or sometimes even at all !

    So if someone has listed the domain "albenga.tel" for sale Sedo will have checked they were the owner at the date of listing the domain.

    If the owner subsequently let that domain drop, which I guess is what happened with "albenga.tel", then unless the owner who listed it in his/her Sedo account deleted the domain from their account it will still be there and listed on Sedo's marketplace.

    If you were to open your own Sedo account, then attempt to "Add Domain", Sedo would stop you from doing so as it is already listed by another person on their marketplace.

    So what you do (I have done this successfully whenever it was necessary) is use the Sedo support ticket system to say you now own the domain - I would include the link http://www.easywhois.com/?domain=albenga.tel in the support ticket to make it quick and easy for them to check this whilst they read the ticket.

    As I said, it's worked for me every time the situation you describe has arisen.

    Maybe Sedo is quick at paying sellers, but does not respond to emails (three days later) and it's hard to send a ticket.

    When I try to fill the form, the site does not accept my email saying "An existing account already uses this email address.
    Please use the login field above to login
    "

    But if I go to the login page and try to recover the password entering my email, I get the message "Your entry contains errors. Email address unknow"

    And this is right because I don't have an account on sedo!

    Funny.

    @silvano
    You just have discovered the code of conduct from Sedo: They have a very good service when money is involved for them (commission fees). Trades get executed quickly and smoothly. All other activities are neglected by them.

    @silvano @rambo

    As I stated in my post my experience with Sedo has been nothing but positive - any issues have been resolved via their support ticket system.

    It seems reasonable that they will only deal with their own customers i.e. people with a Sedo account, but since this is free you can always open a new account in a couple of minutes to get access to their support ticket system.

    It works for me - even before I sold my first domain via them !

    Finally, Sedo has cancelled the sale of "albenga.tel"

    Maybe the word s.c.a.m inserted inside the email worked...
