Indeed remarkable since only 1,500 Telnames exist so far. Clearly driving schools are important customers for Telnames.

The new strategy of Telnames becomes clear now:
Instead of distributing .tel to domain investors as in the year 2009, with the launch of Telnames .tel domains get sold to end users now.
The target now is to sell just a few thousands domains per year to more loyal and less demanding customers.
This new strategy is a complete success for Telnic, because they can build a small but stable customer base.
This way with only very little effort Telnic secures enough revenues for their own survival and doesn't need to worry about the failed success which was expected a few years ago.
More domain investors will continually leave .tel, but with a little bit of luck new registrations by Telnames can reduce the decline of registration numbers over all.
The downside of this is we can’t expect Telnic will resume their development effort. Probably Telnic hasn’t stopped their software development only temporarily.
Now making suggestions for software improvement seems pretty irrelevant to me.

Yes, it is true Telnic always tried to create a very cost-efficient product.
But I don’t agree with your conclusions:
    1. The reduction of costs for development ensures cheap prices for .tel domains in the future, too. That is also important for future success.
    2. Most disappointed domain investors have left the game already. Remaining investors surely have a long-term goal, because everybody knows already that the fast success hasn’t come.
    3. Furthermore I don’t see why low registration numbers in the beginning for Telnames shouldn’t lead to a stronger growth in the future.
    4. The 1,500 .tel domains from Telnames have been sold with very little marketing. Telnames hasn’t done much to become popular. If this should change, we can expect only a big increase for .tel.
    5. As mentioned by others on this forum, because of the unique technology of .tel the chance for a partnership with bigger companies is not unlikely. With such incident software development would increase without any doubts again.

Telnames is probably trying new channels where they can get a bigger bang for the buck (pound). By focusing on associations they can pitch a message that can be broadcast to their members. Instead of spreading their money to registrars and getting nothing for it, TN has chosen a more direct approach with specific groups. A very good strategy, takes longer but less expensive. We should do this with local organizations like Chambers of Commerce, build up awareness for the value of .Tel, pitch the same benefits. All these TELs are good candidates for a next year drop. Why I think so:

    1. Because all these names are too complicated to be remembered and I think that driving-courses users will not remember them by their minds.

    2. It would be not a problem, if driving-courses users would be able to find them via Google search. But as TELs from Telnames have no subdomains, that means that it is impossible to "promote" all these TELs to the first pages of Google by filling subdomains with respective unique content.

So, they are useless for business, and the right decision of their owners will be to drop them next year (or to move them to registrars which allow subdomains).

    Good point!
Rather selling 1.500 Telnames with content than 10.000 Telnics without content.
Not registration numbers count but utilization of registered domains.
The active used Telnames will bring publicity in a second step.
Compliment to Telnames for this approach.

    I completely disagree.
http://driving-success.tel, http://iwanttodrive.tel, http://lovedriving.tel and many more are very easy to remember.
And registering the company name like http://drivesmith.tel is another good branding strategy.
In addition customers don't need to remember the domain name. More importantly customers will find the domain easily (via Yellow Pages or a well-known search engine).
As soon the product from Telnames will be popular, of course we will see an appropriate search for them. If Telnic doesn't provide it, then somebody else will create a new directory.
Another reason why I doubt those domains will be dropped is that the driving school certainly will like the cheap mobile and desktop website easy to manage and for low price.
Different than domain speculators these end users will see the value more in their presence on the internet than in the increasing value of keyword domains.
Besides it will be difficult to find a better domain name, because quality keywords like drivingschool.tel are all taken.

There are still some good driving school names available - http://TheDrivingSchool.tel was only registered this afternoon and the number of domains with the format http://DrivingSchool(cityortown).tel still available must be huge if you consider all the cities and towns in the world where English is the main language.

Driving Schools looks like a really popular niche for Telnames .tels !

I've been preaching quality over quantity for .tel and TelPages for years, and in this forum only last week.

OK here's one - not as good as http://TheDrivingSchool.tel - but it is still available as I post - http://www.easywhois.com/?domain=DrivingSchoolLessons.tel

I would only bother registering it as a Telnames .tel - IMO the old-style Telnic .tels have negligible value since "Joe Public" will from now on expect a .tel to be in the http://YourBusiness.tel format.

Nice directory! With the design from Telnames it would look fantastic!
We really need a solution which combines the services from Telnic (sub domains) and Telnames (nice design)!

Excellent keyword domains, but unfortunately with a dash. A dash is only common in Germany.

drivinginstructor.tel is better than driving-instructor.tel, but the difference is not that big. If you use a domain with dash, you can rank very well in search engines the same way.

Maybe so, but after the initial clickthrough from the search engine to the "dash" site you can be pretty certain that if the user types the domain name in subsequently they will on many occasions type in the "non-dash" site name.

You may perhaps accept this potential loss of traffic if the "non-dash" is a parked page (with a too high sales price tag so it will never sell) but if it's a competing site forget it !

I only have one "dash" web site - http://www.Net-Link.com (net-link.co.uk was the first domain I ever registered, I bought the .com later) - it's too good a name to give up and it's obvious if someone type in http://www.NetLink.com that it's not a search engine.

But I would never start brand building today owning just the "dash" version of a domain name !

Owning both versions (with and without dash) is the best option, so you will be found no matter what!
