If you put it that way, it sounds disastrous.
It's about the focus you use, because the target has changed:
    • Launching a great product at Telnames this year
    • Realization of domain registration and administration only with the iPhone app from this month
    • Declining, but still stable registration numbers
    • Great customer support at Telnames
    • Small, but new marketing approaches by Telnames
    • Concentration on the mobile market
    • Increasing percentage of domains which are used actively
    • Delivering a great solution for small businesses instead discussing a lot about it
    • Addressing end users instead of the domain industry
    • Increasing marketing for Telnames
I guess this is answer enough to your initial question!

Yes, the focus is on Telnames.
Certainly Telnic will concentrate only on this project.
After Telnames will have a noticeable customer base, I could imagine activities for Telnic will be reactivated.

It shows Telnic are [Inappropriate word deleted! - The admin]. With 250,000 existing domains they abandon them and set up a failing competitor.

They could have attempted to raise the price of .tel and given all new features to the existing owners - not forgetting sub-domains too.

These people are way beyond [Inappropriate word deleted! - The admin]. They will wind up as a case study in stupidity at business schools.

Never screw your existing customers over!

Get those CVs out to KFC, McDonalds and Burger King Telnic boys. Practice the line 'you want fries with that?' for your new careers.

Template and mobile app for Telnames could have been realized for all Telnic customers.
Nobody would be angry and .tel would be on its way to success.

Absolutely, Totally, 100% agree with Sunrise !

It costs much more to get a new customer than keep an existing one - smart companies of course do both !

Do Telnic have a "death wish" - or is there some grand master plan that none of us on this forum can work out ?

If there is such a plan then Telnic better activate it quickly - with 1000+ new gTLDs arriving soon they are going to take software developers time, domain investors money, and registrars marketing commitment.

Or does Telnic need none of these ?

My guess is that they thought to create new jobs for two more director's positions. More positions, more salaries.

May be even more new director's positions will be created if another guess will come true:

As mentioned on this forum before we know already what Telnic was thinking, because there are several reasons for the existence of Telnames:
    - Telnic want the registrars to develop .tel, because Telnic don't want to be bothered with software development. Telnic shows the registrars how to do it with Telnames. If Telnic would provide the same quality as Telnames, there would be no reason to improve the templates anymore.
    - Telnic was bothered with customer requests in the past. They are tired of discussions, so they have just shut down the service for Telnic.
    - The Telnic company can be sold, but the same people can still earn money with Telnames.
    - Telnic want to earn higher revenues with domain sales by Telnames (£14.95 instead of only $8).
    - .tel was supposed to become a global established product. Telnic thought with this background they can do what they want.
    - Nobody in the past has ever founded two companies for the same product. Telnic thought they are smart by trying something new.
    - Telnic noticed their early failure. They wanted a fresh start without disrepute and they operating under a different name now.
    - Telnic thought they could operate Telnames without customers from Telnic noticing.

Sad as it is there are no honorable reasons to identify.
And Telnic still sticks to this strategy, because there are no signs for reactivating any activities at Telnic.
But Telnic is very good in preventing successful business activities, because all customer suggestions have been always ignored since long.

Do you know what could be the funniest trick of Telnic? Would it be very funny if they will increase TEL registering/renewing fee from current $10 to $50-70, for example?

Do you think it is impossible? After 3.5 years with them, after reading four forums, dedicated to TEL, after reading press about Telnic's people, it seems to me quite possible.

Imagine, please, what you will do if one nice day such situation will happen in reality? If you have one or two TELs, then, of course, stress will be not very strong. But what if you have a portfolio of 50 TELs? Or of 100 TELs? Or of 200 TELs? And instead of paying $10 for renewing one TEL you will need to pay yearly those $50-70 for every your TEL?

That will be the real end.

Many reasons why this won't happen:
    - Any advantage of .tel would be gone immediately.
    - 95 % of all domains would drop, so revenues for Telnic would crash.
    - No new registrations will happen anymore, so any future potential would be destroyed.
    - Telnic made many mistakes, but they are not so stupid.
    - ICANN doesn't allow such big price changes.

Can't you see the obvious? Actually Telnic acted very smart, because they noticed very early the business model of Telnic won't succeed. Because of this they stopped the old service at Telnic and made something completely new with Telnames. Certainly Telnic has only the best in mind for .tel.

Should that not include involving old customers? Can you imagine how people would speak about .tel if Telnic would keep them informed? The situation could be only better than now.
If Telnic don't want to continue the support of the old .tel, should they not at least name the reasons for it? But if Telnic keep silent, they can't earn any understanding!

Telchina didn't rise the price; it was always that high.
Telchina is a registrar and can adjust the price for their customers as they want; but Telchina has to compete with other registrars.
Telnic is a registry and has to follow the ICANN agreements / regulations; Telnic can't adjust the registry fees arbitrary.

Telnic should better think about the value of their product for customers.
Satisfied customers would bring the most value to them, too.
The customers have told Telnic in large amount what they want - and it's not rocket science!
