I've been doing some research and compiling some stats on .tel usage. From the live DNS data, I present this random wall of icons. Some stats coming a bit later.

This confirms that almost no .tels at Telnic are developed, but most .tels at Telnames are.
This fact was discussed in the past. It's good to get proof for it.
The question of course is why! Are Telnic customers lazy or are .tels at Telnic not appealing?

I have several theories for pro .tel undevelopment
    1) registrars do not provide post sale paths for help adding content
    2) registrars do not provide examples of what can be done with .tel
    3) buyers do not know about third party tools to add richer content via images and video
    4) vast majority of generic keyword and geo domains are still owned by squatters (stats will show this)

    That's a fact.

    That's a fact, too.

Yes, because information about these tools can be found only hidden at Telnic.org. A normal buyer wouldn't search there for long.

A squatter is somebody who occupies a domain that the squatter does not own, rent or otherwise has lawful permission to use. This applies for trademarks, but not for generic keywords. Instead I believe the valuable keywords are owned by 1) speculators and 2) domainers. Not all but many domainers tend to develop their domains if they are satisfied with the result.

At the end of the day there is no doubt the popularity of .tel would be much higher if .tel domains would be developed. The best keywords for every domain extension with a higher number of registrations are always registered by domainers. Why this should be only a problem for .tel?

And why many domainers develop domains under .com, .net, .co, .me and .info, but very few under .tel? This leads to the following difficulty: How to motivate domainers to develop their .tels?

If it's not missing design what holds .tel owners back, then something else must be wrong with the product (but not with the domainers, because they act the same for every domain extension)!

Why not? Nice design and good functionality are very important things -not only in case with TEL, but everywhere.

For example, nobody will buy a new car, which looks ugly (or not attractively) and which in addition has its steering wheel inside of the cabin and its gearshift lever and brakes outside of the cabin - like it is now with TEL.

Tim Spears wrote:...but not with the domainers, because they act the same for every domain extension!
I agree, that domainers are not the obstacle, because if somebody from serious people would like to develop TEL which he does not own, then he can simply buy it from its current owner.

if the tels from telnic are not developed BECAUSE they are in the hands of domainers, then WHY no other customers are buying them?
is it the fault of domainers if telnic can't attract other customers?
interesting that telnames is able to attract different customers (even they are not many yet) !!!
why telnic can't do the same?

The Telnic .tels are not ordinary websites, don't have the appeal of ordinary websites and cannot get the numbers of other extensions.

The Telnames .tels are not websites, but individual pages.

If only 7.6% of the Telnic .tels are populated, it's because they were registered almost totally by domainers and speculators who have no interest in developing, but in selling.

Now there are no more speculators willing to buy .tels and Telnames, with its high prices, sells only to end users who develop their page.

I am part of that 7.6% of jerks that register .tel sites for developing .

After ligury.tel, I just finished working on the first version of liguria.tel: 235 towns, 139 Museums, 713 Bed & Breakfast, 107 Campsites, 253 Farmohuse Accomodations, 817 Restaurants... and the work will continue.

    Thanks for these impressive numbers:
Based on several metrics, it is estimated that 7.6% of non-IDN .Tel domains are populated, compared to 71.6% of TelNames sites.
Only 1.6% of 4900 PREMIUM domains have been developed.

    And a great idea:
We've developed a number of tools to make it easier for you to manage and control dynamic advertisements on your .Tel domains.
Dynamic advertisements are banners that you make rotate on your domains. Using a pool of banners, ...
    Coming in 2013.
