There are a few sites, a Russian site can't recall but todo with taxis and buses, the guy/girl in Amsterdam does well with Adsense, my own experience had Bali and Boracay both at the top page of google for targeted keywords and directory itself.

Those of us who use the subdomain and keyword aspects of telnic .tel are not complaining about SEO options and results. 

Point being we use it as is.
The redirect helps the telnames side of things.

Probably it's possible to use .tel domains for some niches.
It could be that the SEO results for .tel improve over time, too!
