Ouch. google are teaming up with .ca and giving away domains.

interesting discussion going on here...

Boracay,
That according to our colleagues at this Forum is a program that's been running for over 12 months in various places incl Australia and Britain.

Canadian members here have been at the forefront of pushing .tel in Vancouver, and webnames.ca were definately pumping .tel in Canada for a couple of years. (dropped off significantly as far as I can tell, since the apparent flop of the retailcard concept)

partnerships. this is significant re canada. 100,000 free domains that are going to .ca (in the .tel evangelists backyard)

I would have to agree as far as the basic .tel concept is concerned of having a cheap online presence.

If it is rolled out in other countries, we will all suffer. SMEs will opt for a free website over .tel for all the obvious reasons.

It would be almost impossible also from a marketing point of view to compete with Google and partners such as Chambers of Commerce.

Not sure how much it would impact on .tel directories.

Mobile and the whole concept of controlling 'my data' is the real future for the .tel domain.

It's a bumpy ride but we'll get there.

It's only free for the first two years

Dot Tel Phase 2

It's a good job .tel has Phase 2 up its sleeve - no domain extension will ever be able to offer this Killer App - I just hope we reach the critical mass soon so that Phase 2 can be launched!

Sadly there are those who still don't understand that Websites are not competition for .TEL, and vice versa.

Billions of devices that are not Website capable use .TEL for basic listing information and TelPages for lookup.

TelPages is like Yellow Pages, a Directory of Basic "Yellow" and "White" Listings of critical information available across all devices.

Google, Websites -- that's what comes after this fact -- just like Yellow Pages today.

.TEL and TelPages = Listings
.XYZ and Google = Everything

Imagine you walk into a huge Library.

Google wants to throw millions of results to millions of huge books of unknown content at you.
TelPages wants to throw millions of results to millions of synopses at you for easier navigation across more devices.

Google = Book Landfill
TelPages = Card Catalogue

I think two years is enough for many small scale business to decide whether they going good or not.

Untill the general mass understands .tel is different to websites .tel is going to be regarded as a website. This is the way it is. Tel is web presence after all. I personally think .tel would be ideal for the people that will take on gybo schemes, however a free site and web address is cheaper than £10 for something that is mobile optimised a quicker to load up. Now if .tel could be available with a no hassle email address perhaps this would make them stickier.

For only one year, not for two?

.co.uk domains are registered for two years at a time where as a .ca may be registered for one year at a time.

It seems to me that it is not a direct competitor for TEL. After the first year there will be again name+hosting costs yearly + hiring a webmaster.

unfortunately most people look at it as it is free now. After the first year they have the web address which links the customer to yola as such they will be more likely to continue to stay there. Who wants to loose an address which there customers know. Who has the time/technical know how to transfer to a different company.

On the flip side when something is offered for free it gives the impression that it is disposable. So dont think it would be good for .tels to be offered for free (even for the first year) bundled perhaps but not free.

Very good visual summary of the current situation Telrific, but as mentioned in my earlier post Phase 2 is what .tel is all about - we just need to get to Phase 2 a.s.a.p. for .tel to become the worldwide success it is capable of.

I agree 100%

"current" situation is the problem, if they can't get Phase 1, then Phase 2 will just get "blank stare 2".
