    Some criteria to consider:

    • Name as short as possible; the shorter the better
    • Composed out of maximum 2 words, better only 1 word
    • No typos
    • No hyphen(s)
    • Fail-safe in spelling
    • Easy to pronounce and clear to understand
    • Memorizable

    • Highest possible reference to the topic of the future content
    • Nouns are better than verbs
    • Mostly singular nouns are better than plural nouns

    • American English is better than British English (except you offer products in the UK)
    • Best option is when the American and British spelling is identical
    • Internationalized Domain Names (IDN) are second quality

    • The more alternative TLDs are registered with the keyword, the better
    • The more websites under alternative TLDs with the keyword are developed, the better (no parking pages)

    • No registration of domain names with already registered trademarks & brands
    • Use the traffic estimator of the Google Keyword Tool to find valuable keywords (high numbers of search requests, clicks and CPC)
    • Great adaptable names are GEOs (cities and countries), industries, products, services, professions, hobbies and widely used names (especially first & last names)

Do you know more or different criteria? How do you decide what name(s) do you register?

    A domain name must:
    1. clearly state and define the product or service being sold.
    2. be easy to pronounce and therefore pass the radio test.
    3. not be longer than necessary, the shorter the better.
    4. be about a product or service that is in demand & being searched for.
    5. be easy to remember, in fact it must be a no brainer to remember.
    6. be a domain a business could be built on.

Hopefully BoatSearchEngine.com and Domains123.com meet most of the above criteria ?

But probably the best example I have to offer is Telesales.co - .CO of course standing for COmpany or COrporation.
