The .com registry grew to more than 100 million domain names during Q1 2012.

ccTLD registrations hit 94.9 million domains.

Read a lot of interesting details in the The Domain Name Industry Brief.

Most people own a phone number!

If we assume most people also will need or want a domain name in the future, compared with the current world population of about 7 billion, 233 million domain names is nothing
(especially since most of them are owned by companies or by domain investors, but not by individuals with demands for the daily use of their own domain).

Using a .Tel Total Registrations figure of 270,000 (see http://www.dottel.net for precise figure) that gives a market penetration of 0.1159% for .Tel !

With a market share of 0.1 % .tel would have already several millions of registrations if every human being on the planet would own only one domain (without increase of market share).

Should .tel get more awareness and therefore a higher market share (what it hopefully will), then the potential is hardly imaginable.

But you're right; the current numbers are not satisfying at all.

I hope the big advantages of .tel will be discovered one day (and demanded development will take place), so .tel could become the best fitting solution for Joe Public in the future.
