Yesterday a guy from Wisconsin picked up the following dropping .tel domains (which have been registered through landrush before) through OpenSRS:

    • automobile.tel
    • cleaning.tel
    • coffee.tel
    • cooking.tel
    • copies.tel
    • dan.tel
    • engineers.tel
    • landscape.tel
    • nude.tel
    • printer.tel
    • santa.tel
    • videogames.tel
    • volleyball.tel
    • wrestling.tel

    Could I make you jealous?

Domain Last Updated Date: Wed May 02 04:09:29 GMT 2012

    landscape.tel

When the owner of a .tel domain doesn't renew it, it can be backordered by other customers of the current registrar before they go through the deletion phase.
In that case the domain gets displayed with the new owner, but with the registration date of the first owner.
Since all above mentioned .tel domains appeared in the new .tel registration statistic from yesterday, I expected this was the case.

But there is another possibility: Perhaps only the TelHosting zone was published by renewal from the first (and only) owner.
And yes; I checked the archived WhoIs data of the domains above: The owner is still the same.

So it becomes clear the owner decided to renew his generic domains which expired on 22nd March 2012 finally on 2nd May 2012.
(I don't know the reason why this happened so late.)

Thank you for the hint, Bimbam!

Not really. What can you do with coffee.tel for example

The problem with.tel is that people register domains that are not suitable for use. .tel is great for creating directories so I would rather register for examle londondoctors.tel and create a doctor's directory for London than any of the above (by the way this domain is available)

There are thousands of cities around the world and if people create sites with city name and business like londondoctors, lawyers, dentists, restaurants and so on we will have millions of .tel website in a very short time. Having million sites like these around the world people will automatically start to use them instead of looking for it on Google

If I own a cafe, I would be happy if I can tell my customers they could find my business card (and perhaps my list of beverages) with the term coffee.tel.
I can be sure they will never forget my website / phone number.

This is true, very good for your business but if you registered for example coffeedistributors and charged every distributor of coffee only $10 - 20 a year you would have steady income for life

You are absolutely right, but SMB usually don't know what valuable keywords are. If they don't get consultation they will prefer to choose a domain name related to their business name or an easy to remember slogan.
