.tel in comparison with other TLDs Empty .tel in comparison with other TLDs

Post by FrankW. 2013-07-14, 6:59 am

    From Tuesday, July 9th, 2013: http://domainnamewire.com/2013/07/09/which-tlds-have-the-most-popular-web-sites/

Which TLDs have the most popular web sites?

Another way to evaluate the success of a top level domain.

As new top level domains start rolling off the assembly line in the coming months, there are a number of metrics we’ll consider to analyze how well they’re doing.

Domains under management (total domains) will be a key metric. The registries will care more about revenue, particularly if they charge more than other domains or sell a lot of premium domains. For some domains, fuzzy numbers around how well they serve the community will be considered.

Another way to look at the overall health of a TLD is to see how many registrants are creating successful sites using the TLD.

A ready source of data for this is Alexa’s list of top million sites. I cross-referenced the number of domains in yesterday’s Alexa top million list with the number of registered domains across the 12 TLDs that report monthly numbers to ICANN and have more than 50,000 registrations.

    The numbers are interesting:

.tel in comparison with other TLDs Top-tld-alexa

The middle column shows the number of sites for the top level domain that rank in Alexa’s top million. The right column shows how many domains per 1,000 registered for the TLD are in Alexa’s top million.

Yes, there are a bunch of holes you can poke in data like this. It’s not very meaningful for .tel since you can create web sites on .tel, for example. Perhaps the gross number of domains in the top million is more relevant, although that doesn’t take into consideration the niche nature of some TLDs.

Nonetheless, I think it’s another interesting way to cut the data.

ccTLDs are a bit harder to track because finding total registration numbers is hard. Interestingly, .gr (Greece), .jp (Japan), and .ru (Russia) have the highest rankings overall, well ahead of .com.

Is the performance result of these 11 .tels under the top 1 million more caused by Telnic or by the .tel owners?
Fact is that almost nobody in the world is building .tel domains.

Just checked 4 .tel domains which should be highly trafficked:

    http://Telnic.tel - Alexa rank = 6,843,682

    http://Telnames.tel - Alexa rank = 20,087,968

    http://Justin.tel - Alexa rank = 30,869,681

    http://Taxinumbers.tel - Alexa rank =  10,669,596

So I've no idea which are the 11 sites in the Top Million - if you want to try and find out here's the Alexa checking URL for my Domains123.tel site - http://www.alexa.com/search?q=domains123.tel - Alexa rank = 16,785,100 so higher that Telnames !

Perhaps if you find one of the 11 .Tels in the Top Million you could post it here ?

I created a table two months ago: http://www.teltalk.org/t1199-list-of-the-most-accessed-sites-with-tel-domain-extension
That time I found 19 .tels in the top-million (all from Telnic, none from Telnames).

    @Tel - thanks - interesting table - I remember that thread now !

Your comment re ALL Telnic, NO Telnames domains in the Top Million backs up what's been said on this forum about the SEO/Traffic issues facing single page .tels.

Athough to be fair it must be appreciated that Telnames .tels have only been around for just over 1 year compared to over 4 for Telnic .tels.

Only one chance for a .tel from Telnames to hit the top million:

Massive marketing (best with printed materials, on television and placing a lot of links on very famous websites) far beyond the ownership of a .tel.

But who will invest millions of dollars for marketing of a domain with only a phone number on it (and without real content)?

Only a .tel from Telnic can reach the top million only with SEO (but it's very hard, too).

With Telnic/Telnames looking unlikely to ever develop this missing software I just wonder how long it will be before the (mostly) internet web site newbies currently registering Telnames .tels realise WITHOUT NEW CUSTOMERS BEING FOUND BY SEARCH ENGINES their isn't a huge point in registering and populating a domain ?
