    Hopefully that won't happen for a 3rd time !

Welcome to the forum @500 and good luck with your efforts at http://500.name - the TEL REGISTRY AGREEMENT EXPIRY COUNTDOWN is an innovative idea.

As forum members will know I still believe in the .tel concept - usage of the "Data in the DNS" by 3rd parties to provide automated software services is the reason for .tel's existence - but IMO the implementation by Telnic has been appalling (alienating what could have been a massive "ecosystem") even though they had $35,000,000 of shareholders money to do the job properly !

I don't believe anything will change significantly for the .tel project until THE MONEY RUNS OUT AT TELNIC - once the 2013 set of accounts are published it should be fairly easy to calculate an approximate date for this.

Of course the investors who have already stumped up $35,000,000 could pump a few more millions in - but somehow I doubt it - I anticipate a takeover by one of the many companies currently investing in gTLDs.

    TIME WILL .TEL !

If they do, they prevent the chance of winning a proactive .tel operator as successor.

If you're talking about "net" registrations (ie. new regs less drops) that statement is true most days now !

Checking http://www.dottel.net I notice Telnames total regs (the TN figure) have been dropping as well recently - down from 11,4nn a few days ago to 11,235 today.

Total .tel registrations of all types have seen a massive drop from the peak figure of 333,891 on 1 March 2011 (see http://www.hosterstats.com/DomainNameCounts2011.php) to 211,482 today.

And yet still Telnic/Telnames don't recognise they have a major problem and refuse to implement the most obvious actions needed (as suggested in http://www.teltalk.org/t1497-the-reality-of-tel#9129) NOW !

Nobody knows what goes on at Telnic, so we can only guess. I guess Telnic still believes in a breakthrough with Telnames. I'm afraid that the imminent halving of registration numbers both at Telnic and Telnames still won't open their eyes.

PS: It's easier to shut down this TLD with as few registrations left as possible.

http://www.dottel.net today shows 211,279 Total .Tel Regs with 11,079 Telnames.

I've not used detailed statistical analysis for many years but you don't need this knowledge to realise the obvious - Total .Tel Regs are heading down towards 210K and Telnames Regs are stuck around 11K !

    So what's Plan B Telnic/Telnames, given that Plan A isn't working - I assume there is a Plan B ?

One year ago with the Telnames TV commercial the last marketing activity was on air. Since most customers are dropping their .tels after the first year, I expect the numbers for Telnames will drop faster from now on.

It was possible to watch the activity since 2009. I'm convinced: No, there is no Plan B !

The only reaction from Telnic to low sales numbers has been always to reduce every activity even more.

@500 - So 30 May 2016 is the date the Telnic registry agreement for .tel expires with ICANN and has to be renegotiated.

Actually I think the last of Telnic's $35,000,000 shareholder investment may well have run out before then !

    Suspense! What will happen?
Telnic has shown that no activity is wanted to increase registration numbers.
If the shareholders won't pump fresh money into Telnic, then ICANN has to search for a new operator of this TLD latest in 2016.

There is of course one person, a Director of both Telnic Ltd and Telnames Ltd (see  http://www.companiesintheuk.co.uk/ltd/telnic and http://www.companiesintheuk.co.uk/ltd/telnames) who should be able to bale out Telnic/Telnames financially - Henri Asseily

Alex wrote:Henri Asseily is a serial entrepreneur, whose current position is Chief Strategist of Telnic Ltd, the registry for the new .tel top-level domains. In 1996 he co-founded BizRate.com, one of the world’s largest and best-known consumer feedback platforms, surveying tens of millions of buyers each year and providing store ratings and customer feedback to help hundreds of millions of online shoppers buy more confidently. In 1999, he expanded the platform to online comparison shopping and created Shopzilla which today is one of the largest shopping sites in the world, facilitating billions of dollars in gross merchandise sales and consistently ranked in the top 50 overall sites worldwide.  In 2005, Shopzilla was acquired by E.W. Scripps for $569 million dollars. A 17-year veteran of the Internet, Mr Asseily invests and mentors companies in sectors as broad as online media, digital intelligence gathering and green industries. Mr Asseily holds an MBA in Entrepreneurship from the Wharton School, and a double Bachelor in Mathematics andEconomics from the University of Pennsylvania.

Henri sold Shopzilla for $569,000,000 back in 2005 - not sure what percentage he owned then - but I would imagine he still has a few million dollars left from this !

Will he decide to plough more money into Telnic/Telnames when the last of the $35,000,000 shareholder investment runs out ?

    Would you ?

    Mike, That's great news.
It would be very easy to improve .tel. We only have to wait for the day when Telnic is sold.

And I understand one thing now:
There is no reason to rush, because something is happening behind the scenes that we don't know about.

BTW why should Henri hurry (with $569 million dollars in the back)?

@ixida - I never said Henri Asseily WOULD bankroll Telnic when they finally run out of money - only that it looks as if he COULD if he chose to do so !

You could always phone him to clarify the situation - his contact numbers are on http://henri.tel - note that his mobile and office numbers are currently prefixed +961 which is the country code for Lebanon.
