The new generic TLD .domains will go live on 12.03.2014. You can pre-register the domain tel.domains for $14,000 at GoDaddy.
I put it in my shopping cart at GoDaddy, but I hesitated to click on "Buy".

Do not click "Buy". Better spend these money in a pleasant or in a wise way.

Better to just buy teldomains.com for under $1,000

I agree - a .COM would be a more cost-effective purchase - and I can't imagine .COM being knocked off its "King of the Jungle" position any time soon !
For anyone who's seriously interested, just click DotTelDomains.com to buy this domain via Sedo immediately.

No, but at least with new domains, .com finally has some real competition in the space.
Yesterday, .com was the winner because it was "the original" versus "the next lame tld" - it was always a "one-on-one" fight.
Today, you can say that it is the same thing, but it is the beginning of the end for .com, even if it takes awhile.
Meaning this:
Imagine the internet was just starting today, and you could choose .(anythingyouwant) - The tld ".com" ".net" and ".org" would be just more lame tld candidates among gems.
No one, or very few, would choose ".com" over others if they were all launched for the first time today... and this is a paradigm shift that will eventually change the face of tlds forever. It's not a "one-on-one" fight anymore, there are real extensions that may be chosen finally.
The most popular "chosen" tlds will eventually win, and .com wouldn't be a winner today, so not likely the winner in the future either.
Just a matter of time.
.tel still has the chance to be the ONLY unique tld of all time, and if it had a "2nd level only" search engine without the subdomains, it would top all tlds as the internet starting point for contact information among the chaos ... still.
