    .tel is not good:

Telnames offer an integrated mobile website without additional costs. This is bad for all hosting providers who want to sell additional services.

With .tel the contact data of businesses are always easy to find. This is bad, because contact data of a website needs to be difficult to find like it’s the norm on other websites. If the users don’t have to search for contact data anymore, the click rate of the websites would decline dramatically. This isn’t good for SEO purposes. A higher click rate influences the ranking of a website positively.

.tel can be implemented into phone applications. This is bad, because people are using cryptic phone numbers since long. It wouldn’t be good if users have to change their habit by using memorizable names instead to call somebody.

.tel is so easy to customize. This is bad, because cost-intensive services would lose a lot of customers.

.tel makes the contact data of businesses easily accessible, but contact data belongs hidden. As example criminals and dishonest people intend to arrange their business without getting found, but .tel makes it easy to identify businesses easily.

.tel intends to build a global directory for businesses. This is bad, because if this plan succeeds, the services from all Yellow Pages become useless.

.tel enables people to approach each other much faster by phone. This is bad, because telecommunication services are earning already enough money and a dramatic increase of phone calls initiated by .tel would lead to capacity utilization.

.tel makes it so easy to get to the desired object of search. This would make the use of the whole internet too easy. This is bad, because old industries based on complicated structures could suffer a lot by becoming unattractive.

.tel is based on a different way for domain business than all other websites before. This is bad, because it’s uncomfortable and not good to change old habits.

As you see there are a lot of disadvantages from .tel. To ensure old businesses wouldn’t be endangered by it, it would be better nobody will notice this! Hopefully you have followed my appeal not to read this post!

    Interesting post.

I haven't got time to respond to all the points made by Telnot, but would agree that the above comment about .tel being bad for hosting companies who want to sell additional services is obviously true !

Not sure whether this is the reason why GoDaddy (reputedly the world's largest domain registrar) still doesn't offer .tel 3.5 years after it's launch ?

Or do GoDaddy know something .tel enthusiasts haven't figured out yet ?

Hi, Telnot! I really had to read you comment twice, before I came to the conclusion to agree with you!

If I am not mistaken, I heared somewhere, that some company, related to GoDaddy, wanted to get extention of single numbers only (no letters at all). And instead of GoDaddy the possibility to use such numbers were given by ICANN to Telnic.

If it is so, then GoDaddy have no reasons to like Telnic.

If .tel would have become a success, it could have stolen customers from GoDaddy a lot.
Until now GoDaddy can rest well.
