The question isn't so easy to answer; everything depends on the future.
Since nobody can make a reliable forecast for this, at the end it depends on your personal judgement.
To built your own opinion, here a few hints (sorted by potential customers):
1.) Are you a small business without a website?
Take a look at the new template from Telnames: Is it worth to spend about US$ 25 yearly for the ability to be found on the internet?
Definitely: YES!
2.) Are you a small or big business with a website?
If you have already a professional website, why should you register a .tel in addition?
Does it offer you some additional value?
YES:
3.) Are you an individual?
If you are an advanced user you can use a lot of homepage tools to present yourself in a professional way (very often even for free).
But you have to know the resources and spend some time for it.
Instead the control panel of .tel is suited for everybody (including for people without much knowledge about the internet).
4.) Are you a domain investor?
If .tel domains will become a success, you should keep your .tel domains.
If .tel domains will be used by people in numbers less than a few millions, it's better not to waste any money with it.
But just take a look at the 3 previous categories. Can you imagine the demand for .tel domains from these groups will increase within the time? That should be the case!
And there is still the expectation people and (more important) providers of internet services will discover the advantage of DNS data storage (DNS = Domain Name System). If they do, this technology brings groundbreaking changes to the internet (which are only comparable to the invention of the internet itself).
As you can read from my summary above, it's definitely worth to hang in there.
There can be only one direction in the future: UPWARDS!
What do you thing? Do you have a different point of view?

YES:
- You can support your existing web presence with a better domain name, since you will find a lot of premium domains available for .tel while all good names for .com are taken already.
- Presenting your customers an easy to handle and well arranged phone address book will satisfy them.
- If name dialing for phone connections will become reality in the future, you have no other option than registering a .tel domain.
