Selecting the best name for your .tel website

Creating your own .tel mobile-ready website takes just minutes and is simplicity itself. But as you prepare to get started, the first decision you’ll need to make is which .tel name to choose for your .tel website.

Getting this bit right is important. Because it’s how existing customers will find you using their smartphones right now, and how new customers will come to know you in the future.

    What’s the challenge?

If your business already has an existing website URL such as a .co.uk or .com, then your .tel website name is already sorted. There’s no need to get creative because your .tel website name should exactly reflect your existing website name. If you don’t yet have any kind of website, then using your business name for your .tel website makes a lot of sense. Your name is your brand, and that’s important because customers will search for you online using the name they already know. Consistency is the key here – but more about that later.

If you’re just starting out in business, then you’ll need to apply some imaginative thinking. Your name is your first step to building a strong brand identity that should last as long as you’re in business.

Consider whether you want it to explain what the business does, or whether you want a more abstract name. Also decide what you want it to convey – for example ‘The Fine Cheese Co’ reflects traditional quality values. Before firmly deciding on a name it always pays to Google it first to see if anyone else is using it (or something very similar!).

    Practical steps and top tips

If your company name is very long you may want to think about whether you could shorten it when creating your .tel name without confusing customers. The aim here is to keep it short and sweet, making it easy for smartphone users to type your .tel name into a search engine.

Remember, it doesn’t pay to get clever if you’ve already got a business name. Choosing a .tel name such as ‘DecoratorInChester’ won’t get you a higher ranking in search engines and may serve to confuse customers when they click through to your details.

That’s particularly the case if you’re using our automatic redirect service to link people viewing your existing website from a mobile phone through to your mobile-friendly .tel website – they may get confused and think they’re viewing a different company.

    The benefits of brand consistency

Once you’ve chosen your .tel name and created your .tel website, you’re now ready to boost the brand awareness of your business name by including links to your social media – your company Facebook or LinkedIn pages or your Twitter or Google+ feed. You can also, of course, link to your existing website (if you have one).

Finally, don’t forget to include your .tel page on all of your social media pages profiles – with more than half of Facebook and Twitter users using a mobile phone to access these services, including your .tel as your primary website address ensures that your online visitors will always enjoy an optimal browsing experience.

if businesses really would do this, it would make .tel more important than .com
