That's a thought that often occurs to me when I'm out in my car and I see the multitude of signwriting on vans and lorries - with no chance of being able to remember the phone/fax numbers or email address without writing them down (impractical if driving).
How much simpler to just have a memorable .TEL address in large letters ?
I guess the "Joe Public" van and lorry owners just don't know about the huge benefit of .TEL for such a low cost - which keeps coming back to the lack of Worldwide Marketing taking place currently.
Hopefully that will change now Telnames has been launched - the only question is will it be "Too Little, Too Late" - software developers and domain investors are already looking at the huge opportunities coming with the new gTLDs being launched soon.
Here's ICANN's latest list - http://newgtlds.icann.org/en/program-status/application-results/strings-1200utc-13jun12-en - obviously .CALL and .PHONE are potential threats to .TEL - depending of course on how these two gTLDs are developed and marketed.

PS. Surprised there was no application for .DIAL - unless it's a prohibited extension ?
