Fantastic.

Aled, is it possible to be included in current beta testing? (seriously, just waiting to see what overall marketing materials to produce, and mobile client presentation to prepare) btw, iPad is ALREADY great using desktop proxy. iPhone somewhere in the middle?

Thank you for the encouraging timeframe comment.

Thanks very much for the offer boracy. It's internal testing at the moment, but if there is a requirement for Beta testing I shall certainly let you know.

Yes, the iPad does, and will continue to, use the desktop proxy.

Hi aled, please see above link.
This is an informative site, describing html header code, for hopeful inclusion in the mobile web proxy, that auto-magically converts a .tel webpage to an iphone APP. That is, the web browser navigation bars and menus etc are removed, icon gets created, and clicking on that icon then opens a "splash page image" appearing to be a native .tel APP.

Powerful stuff

Just following on from my last post, when .tel websites are rendered in APP mode, as opposed to regular web-browser mode, there are some interesting and benefitial results happening. Besides from having an instant splash screen pop up (very cool, ie very authentic looking created APP), webkit is allowing for instant contacts to be created/added to the mobile devices contacts app.

See below....

https://files.me.com/boracay/dblba3

This is what a standard .tel looks like with a black background, when in APP mode, on an iPad. Can't wait to see what's possible in APP mode on the iPhone. This is truly impressive to show clients a working directory APP on the iPad and soon the iPhone.

And here's the iPad allowing adding to contacts, by simply touching the phone number text in the heading...

And here's an early example (iphone splash screen) that immediately gets shown after clicking your APP icon

Hi,
I've moved the iPad comments into a separate thread from the initial HTML5 discussion as these are not closely related.

Unfortunately, iPhone app mode has some very very bad side effects. Quoting from the above web page:

However, websites running in app mode don't remember their state on close (Even with the introduction of multitasking in 4.0). That by itself isn't so bad, but in addition, links external to the website will launch in Safari. This means if a user clicks any external link they will have to start over at the home page when returning from Safari. That's a pretty bad user experience, so websites don't tend to utilize app mode unless they are truly self contained.

In my opinion, the negatives outweigh the positives simply because the app mode is so good at simulating a real app that the few abnormalities make for an extremely frustrating experience when the user gets bitten by one of them.
And considering that .tel domains will have a far greater propensity to link to external items, the user will be dumped into Safari a lot more often, and that totally kills the experience.

I am looking on the brighter side, and am hopeful that telnic is open to making some small changes that WILL easily correct for a smooth user experience. As things stand, the user experience on the IPAD (when run in APP mode) is almost PERFECT, and for the most part the user is easily kept within the .tel created app. (easily achieved for directories)

As things currently stand on the iPhone, well, let's just move forward. But it's important to share with the .tel community, that if the coming mobile telproxy (is in anyway similar to or treats links as rendered on the iPad) the user experience WILL be smooth and for the most part be kept within the .tel APP (again, easily for directories)

In anycase, APP mode ultimately is up to the end user to activate. If the .tel directory creator structures things correctly, we are talking an ENORMOUS improvement and sellable product in APP mode, and only minor changes will probably be needed on telnics part.

We can try can't we?

I honestly see iPad as the device that will make .tel the HUGE success it can be.

That is, Tablets in general.

Laptops have their place, as do Cell Phones.

iPad takes the best of both and puts them together.

Perfect for viewing of photos, albums, movies, books, etc. - including Directories.

iPad and other Tablets will also be the next "YouTube Live", that is Video Calls !

Once the TEL is added with Video to iPad, you have the PERFECT all around device / size.

Laptops and Cell Phones will have their place of course, but Tablets will DOMINATE the
rich feature Market for Consumers, and .TEL and TelPages is the perfect compliment !
