EU demands Explicit Cookie Consent from 25 May 2011

Not sure if this affects Telnic's software such as the proxy - but it surely affects most EU-based developers who rely on cookies - not necessarily Permanent cookies but maybe just Session cookies used to store temporary information between page displays.

From 25 May 2011 UK sites will have to meet the new EU directive (see http://tinyurl.com/explicit-cookie-consent) and obtain explicit consent from users to use cookies - no more just mentioning it in your Privacy Policy as most of us do now.

Affiliate Marketing needs cookies to work - many advertisers set a 30-day cookie on a user's computer when they have clicked through from a link on your site, so that if the user goes directly to their site in the next 30 days you still get commission on the order.

It is impractical to ask every visitor to your site if they will allow cookies to be set - many may well answer "No" without really understanding the implications - others will simply hit the Back button and go to non-EU based sites.

This is a crazy idea coming from the unelected bureaucrats of Brussels - it's enough to make you want to emigrate - will the last Affiliate Marketer to leave the UK please turn out the lights!

Wow. If that stands up it will create quite a war ! Amazing way to destroy commerce instantly. They probably get paid by the taxes on the revenues they're destroying too !

    Google:

"Google uses cookies to improve your online experience, including the display of more relevant ads."

    More here

    Yes.

Of course this problem would probably go away if the people of the UK were allowed a Referendum to decide whether they wanted to be in the EU at all - the smart money is on a decisive "No" vote.

That's why the newly launched http://PeoplesPledge.org (which breaks signatories down to constituency level so MPs can see how many votes they are potentially losing) is getting such massive support.

    I'm adding my signature now!
